Following the mid-air collision, the F-16 hit the ground, ricocheted across the tarmac and slid into a parked C-141. Both plans burst into flames, causing an explosion that sent searing-hot metal hurling through the air and the spillage of more than 50,000 gallons of fuel onto Green Ramp.

LOUISIANA AIRBORNE MEMORIAL BRIDGE MONUMENT RELOCATED: In 1988, the 82nd Association challenged all of the Chapters to have substantial bridge named as that states “Airborne Memorial Bridge”. The Acadiana Chapter was successful in getting the Louisiana Legislature to name the 18 1/2 mile I-10 bridge over the Atchafalaya basin as the Airborne Memorial Bridge in 1989. The money was raised by members and a beautiful monument was crafted and placed in the line of traffic near the then restrooms. At that time this was simply a rest stop area. In 2004, the state built a beautiful new “Welcome Center” 100 yards to the west of the monument. This left the monument in a mostly unobserved area. This year the state decided to redo the entrance road and parking lot. They made a decision to move the monument close to the Welcome Center which will make it more visible to the public. The move was accomplished on Monday, March 17, 2014 including the precast concrete benches. The monument will be surrounded by brick pavers who will enhance the site. It stands immediately to the left of the Welcome Centers front porch. It is not very visible from all points. Next time when passing through Louisiana, stop at the rest stop at the Atchafalaya Basin and visit the monument.

DAVID FOWLER FAMILY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: The Chapter received acknowledgement from the family of David Fowler. Marilou, David wife writes, “Thank you so much for your participation at David’s service. It really meant a lot to me and our family to have the Chapter makes a presentation. As you know David was extremely proud of his affiliation with the 82nd Airborne Division so it is fitting he should be buried with a token reflecting his service with the Airborne. Please express our sincere gratitude to the others who participated in the presentation. We were truly honored by your presence.
