Tessellations 1st Quarter Project Math 8

Due NO LATER THAN ______

You will be creating a tessellation as a way of graphically representing your knowledge of Transformations. In addition to the Tessellation you will need to do a write-up explaining what you’ve learned in the unit and how it applies to the Tessellation you created.

Steps for creating a Tessellation (you can also look at the link on your teacher’s website):

Cut a square from cardboard or cardstock.

Draw a design at the top that only touches the side at beginning and end.

Do the same on another side.

Carefully cut out the top piece.

Translate (slide) the top piece to the same position at the bottom of the square.

Use tape to secure the pieces together.

Carefully cut out the side piece.

Translate (slide) the side piece to the same position on the other side of the square. Use tape to secure the pieces together.

Look at your shape from all angles.

Slide, flip and turn your shape to view all possibilities.

Position the shape on the large paper according to the design you see within the shape.

Use a pencil to trace around the shape.

Carefully slide the shape so that the new position fits into the traced shape exactly.

Trace the shape in its new position.

Continue this process until the whole paper is tessellated.

Draw in details to make a picture and color it. (not just a color pattern)

Name the tessellation and sign the original.

With your poster you need a 1 page write up. Include the following information in your paper:

·  Use the key words we’ve learned in math to answer the following questions: (congruent figures, corresponding angles, corresponding sides, transformation, image, translation, reflection, line if reflection, rotation, center of rotation, angle of rotation, similar figures, dilate, center of dilation, enlargement, reduction)

·  Give examples and non-examples of at least 3 of your major vocabulary words.

·  What does congruency have to do with transformations?

·  What did you learn about math through this activity (Note if you learned nothing then your grade will reflect that)?

·  What hints would you give a future student to make this activity easier?

·  What grade do you deserve and why, cite specific examples from your work as evidence?

Make sure you use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The paper needs to be typed and double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 point font with either: Times New Roman or Arial. You may not go over a page. If you do not know how to set the computer to double space, please ask do not try to double space by adding extra spaces between lines.

Grading Rubric

Category / Points Possible / Self-grade / Grade
Complexity & Picture: Student followed all rules and has a complex tessellation that reflects 8th grade knowledge of material. The Tessellation was manipulated until a picture could be formed which was then decorated to highlight it. / 40
Instructions & Overall Neatness: ALL instructions are followed; this includes the list of operations that need to be included and the formatting on the write up. Student has the write up and the poster on or before the due date. / 10
Write-up: One complete cohesive page that answers all the questions combined into a paper, not a list of questions and answers. Student used 8th grade writing skills and backs up all statements with evidence from their project. When necessary the student used pictures to illustrate their ideas. / 50
