RE: Julia LeRoy

Dear Terry,

I am writing on behalf of Julia and her Internship Competencies. Julia has worked for me as an English as a Second Language instructor for 8 years. Over the past 2 years as our ELL population has declined, she has provided homebound services for students with disabilities. Her background and training as a general education teacher as well as her work with ELL students has made the homebound instruction a good match.

Julia has met or will meet the following competencies:

·  Will meet by August 2014- Familiarize yourself with the roles and responsibilities of the special education teacher. Julia will be one of our instructors in our Extended School Year program this summer. She will be under the direction of a special education teacher.

·  Will meet by December, 2014 - Follow a student from referral or referral for a 3 year reevaluation through the eligibility decision making process. Julia has started this process with one of her homebound students, and will continue this next fall with Jeanne Balek, special education teacher at Hayden Meadows Elementary.

·  Will meet by December, 2014 - Attend 2 Individual Education Plan meetings – one initial and one annual review – help with activities related to the development and implementation of the IEP. Julia has started this process and will continue this next fall with Jeanne Balek, special education teacher at Hayden Meadows Elementary.

·  Met - Participate in monitoring activities of the IEP goals and objectives. Julia has completed this through her homebound instruction of a medically fragile student for the 2013-2014 school year.

·  Met - Attend a least two school meetings. Julia has attended numerous school meetings as an ESL instructor for 3 different buildings.

·  Met – Attend one parent teacher conference on issues related to a student with disabilities. Julia has attended all parent conferences this year for the student she has been tutoring.

·  Will meet by May, 2014 - Attend at least one professional development seminar or in-service related to special education. Julia will be attending a district in-service on April 21, 2014 for special education on “Relating the Idaho Core Standards to the IEP Process”.

·  Met – Shadow another member of the multidisciplinary team. Julia works with the Occupational Therapist, Teacher of the Hearing Impaired, and the Speech/Language Pathologist to coordinate programs and activities for the student for whom she provides homebound services.

·  Met – Conduct at least one formal and one informal assessment. Julia conducted formal and informal assessments for her homebound student for the annual IEP this spring. She has also provided IELA assessments for her ESL students, and informal assessments for each student.

·  Will meet by August, 2014 - Develop and teach at least 3 lessons that are observed for feedback by the teacher or the University supervisor. Julia will be one of our instructors in our Extended School Year program this summer. She will be under the direction of a special education teacher.

·  Met - Work with the general education teacher to modify and adapt a several day unit of teaching for a target student. Julia has met each week with the general education and special education teachers of the student she is providing home bound instruction for. Since the instructional day was 2.5 hours instead of the typical 6 hour day, she worked with the general education teacher to modify and adapt units all year long for the student.

·  Will meet by August, 2014 - Assume the role of special education teacher for at least two weeks. Julia will be a special education instructor in our ESY program this summer for 4 weeks.

I look forward to working with Julia in the special education department over the next year.

Sincerely,

Frances Huffman
