Terms / Definition
Backspace Key / Moves the cursor to the left (backward) one space at a time, deleting characters.
Caps Lock Key / Used to key in all capital letters without manually shifting to upper case for each letter.
Computer Literacy / Sufficient computer knowledge to prepare an individual for working and living in a computerized society.
Cursor Movement Keys / Allows the cursor to be moved up, down, left, or right within text.
Delete Key / Used to delete text to the right of the cursor.
DS / The term used to identify vertical spacing between lines of text. DS indicates there is one blank line of space between lines of text.
Enter Key / Used to enter information into a microcomputer or to return the cursor to the beginning of a new line.
Hard copy / The paper copy of information printed from a computer OR a source document.
Hard Return / The actual movement returning the cursor to the beginning of a new line of text.
Insert Key / Allows the user to insert text between words or data without deleting previously keyed text or data when it is on.
Left Shift Key / Used to capitalize letters keyed with the right hand.
Margins / Blank space around keyed text. Default margins for most word processors are approximately 1” around any blank document.
Overtype/Typeover Key / This function allows text to be overwritten when this is on.
Right Shift Key / Used to capitalize letters keyed with the left hand.
Rough Draft / Any handwritten document that has been proofread and corrected in order to be rekeyed.
Script / Any handwritten characters.
Source Document / Any straight copy, script or rough draft, which will be rekeyed in part or in whole.
SS / The term used to identify the vertical spacing between lines of text indicating there is no blank space between lines of text.
Statistical Copy / A source document containing all numbers.
Straight Copy / Keyed text that is used as a source document.
Tab Key / Used to indent or move the cursor quickly to a predetermined tab stop.
Text Area / Area on the screen where keyed text will appear.
TS / The term used to identify the vertical spacing between lines of text indicating there are two blank lines of space between lines of text.
Word wrap / This function will automatically take lines of text down to the next line when text reaches the right margin of the page.
