RESPONSIBILITIES

Scope of Work

1.  To undertake the full range of publicity, campaigning, promotional, educational and training duties relevant to the work of the Group and in accordance with the work programme and priorities identified in the annual Service Plan.

2.  To establish and maintain liaison and good working relationships with other teams and external agencies in pursuance of partnership working to achieve the Council’s aims and objectives.

3.  Individual responsibilities will be drawn from the main areas of work of the team under the direction of the Principal Road Safety Officer, including:

·  Establishing two way communication between young people and those dedicated to disseminating road safety messages including concerned stakeholders.

·  Investigate and develop road safety messages which are relevant to current culture references for young people in 17-24 year age group.

·  Promote and encourage local organisations, communities and businesses to engage with young people.

·  Investigate and develop appropriate resources to target 17-24 year old pedestrians in city centre and along radial routes.

This is not an exhaustive list and may vary from time to time depending on the priorities and requirements of the service.

4.  To provide a sympathetic and effective response to all enquiries.

5.  To carry out the duties of the post in such a way as to ensure that the interests of the public and the Council are adequately protected with respect to the group’s activities.

6.  To actively pursue self improvement and development by attending appropriate training courses and by familiarisation with development in the Team’s specialised field.

7. To assist in managing the resources available for the specified area of work so as to achieve best value and best practice in service delivery.

8. To liaise with all other groups, sections, divisions and departments of the Council, together with external organisations such as South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, statutory undertakers, developers, contractors etc., to ensure the satisfactory execution of the functions carried out within the Team.

9.  To represent the Head of Service at meetings as appropriate.

10.  To contribute to the development and improvement of the services of the Team.

11.  To involve communities and service users in the service, developing and maintaining positive working relationships with customers, and contributing to the public consultation process.

12.  To contribute to establishing, controlling and operating technical information systems.

13.  These duties will require the officer to visit sites in various parts of the city and to work on occasion outside normal working hours.

14.  Any other related duties and responsibilities as may arise.

Post title: Road Safety Officer – Young People

Skills / Knowledge / Experience

Excellent written and verbal communication.
Ability to present confidently and enthusiastically to a range of audiences – particularly young people, in appropriate and accessible formats.
Experience and knowledge of working with young people aged 17-24.
Experience of working effectively in project teams and of delivering agreed results
Experience of working and communicating with stakeholders on projects
Experience of working effectively in project teams and of delivering agreed results
Commitment to equality and diversity and delivering services within an equal opportunities framework
Self-motivated with the ability to initiate and deliver projects to agreed deadlines in a demanding environment, with minimum supervision.
Experience of defining, prioritising, organising and managing tasks.
Ability to work effectively with peers and more senior colleagues.
Ability to engage with a wide range of individuals and interest groups in joint working.
Working collaboratively with stakeholders within and outside the City Council.

Work related circumstances

Commitment to own personal and professional development.
High level IT skills, including the range of Microsoft office products.
Ability to travel locally and to occasionally attend regional and national events
Able to work flexibly with other colleagues within the team and outside of normal office hours if required particularly in the evenings.
Display boards, laptops and other equipment are used at schools and events and the post holder will need to be able to carry/transport this equipment to each venue. A car is not necessary though.
Post holders will be subject to an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.
