Course Description:EME 2040 3 credits TECHNOLOGY FOR EDUCATORS

A course for undergraduate education majors which is designed to establish awareness and proficiency related to productivity tools (word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics), multimedia presentation, hardware and software, and contemporary communications systems, such as E-mail and the World Wide Web. This course includes learning activity designed to ensure competence in the basic use of computers. Generally required as a prerequisite for state university teacher education programs in Florida. Check with prospective transfer program on current requirements.

Course Objectives:Think

1. Students will plan, develop and present a lesson on a topic of their choice about using computers. Students present the lesson by posting a Power Point presentation on WebCT6.

2. Students will appropriatly use instructional design processes to develop instruction that uses current technological methods and tools.

Communicate

3. Students will practice their academic analytical communication skills using Microsoft Word and Power Point.

Act

4. Students will improve their computer skills and abilities.

5. Students will demonstrate CLAST competencies for Reading, English Language, and Logical Reasoning Skills.

6. Students will practice their presentation and problem-solving skills in preparation for future roles in education.

Value

7. Students will evaluate their commitment to the teaching profession through reflection on their on-line course.

Evaluation Process: Basis of semester grades will be your knowledge of educational concepts and theories and your ability to express yourself. Knowledge of educational concepts and theories will be evaluated through projects, quizzes and two exams: a mid-term and a final. Exams will consist of multiple-choice and essay questions. The mid-term will deal with material covered in the textbook, and on-line discussions during the first half of the semester. The final exam will be cumulative, covering material from the entire course.

Evaluation Process

Continued: Because it is so important for teachers to communicate their ideas to colleagues, parents, and administrators effectively, writing clear and error-free English is a priority. Therefore, your ability to express your knowledge of educational concepts and theories within the conventions of academic discourse will be assessed through Power Point presentations and written assignments. Basis of criteria for evaluation will be content and mechanics. Integration of information from readings, on-line discussions, and field experiences will also be taken into consideration.

Assignments:

Web CT – The on-line discussions and material in Web CT take the place of regular class room lectures and discussions. Students shall read all discussion post and reply and share their reflections when they have something to add to the discussion. All completed assignments will be posted in the Web CT assignments tool. Students shall review the various assignment samples and Power Points in the course modules. The following URL is the link to the Web CT sign in page: Web CT is accessed using your Atlas user ID and password.

Quizzes & Surveys – Chapter quizzesconsist of multiple choice questions. A chapter quiz may be given on-line at the conclusion of any chapter. There will be several chapter quizzes during the course. You take quizzes on-line in our course in WebCT6. Quizzes and test are located in the assesment tool.

Mid-term Exam – The exam consists of multiple choice, short answer, or essay questions. The exam will include the chapters previously covered online. You will begin the exam on March 29.

Final Exam – The exam consist’s of 5 essay questions worth 10 points each. The exam is cummulative and will contain questions from all chapters previously covered online.

Project - Flyer Using Word – Students will design and develop a flyer using Microsoft Word that demonstrates or explains the use of technology in education. Specific instructions and additional information is located in WebCT6 in the assignments tool.

Project – Power Point Lesson - Students will design and develop a lesson of their choice. Students will create a Power Point show to present the lesson. The lesson should last 10 minutes. Specific instructions and additional information is located in WebCT6 in the assignments tool.

Project - Portfolio – Students will create a portfolio of their work in this course. The portfolio will contain a Resume and the Word and Power Point projects. Students will make needed revisions to returned assignments for inclusion in the portfolio. Students will present their portfolio to the class by posting a Power Point presentation in the Portfolio discussion in Web CT. Sample portfolio Power Points will be posted in the Portfolio content module in Web CT. Students will upload their portfolio papers and Power Points to My Portfolio in the My Life Map section of Atlas. Instructions for using My Portfolio are provided in the My Life Map section of Atlas.

For this on-line course you will submit your portfolio on-line. The East Campus Education department requires you to assemble a 3 ring binder portfolio as a requirement for the AA degree. The instructions are provided in the East campus Education Student Handbook. For our on-line course only follow the assignment instructions for the portfolio assignment in WebCT6 assignment tool.

Policies and Procedures

On-line Participation:Students are expected to read all messages posted on the forums and participate in the on-line activities. Regular weekly participation is a significant factor, which result in success in this course.

Faculty Initiated

Withdrawal Policy:An excessive absence notice will be sent to the student through ATLAS upon the third (3) week of non participation in online activities. Any additional non participation may result in an instructor initiated withdrawal from this course pursuant to Academic Policies and Procedurs in the Valencia College Catalog, pages 62-65.

Make-up Policy for Examinations and All Other Assignments:

  • If you are unable to participate, please submit any work due during the week or session that you do not participate in during the following week.
  • If your non participation is uncontrollable, unforseen, and you are not able to submit work due prior to not participating during a week, you will need to submit the work or the presentation during the following week. In addition you will need to provide third party documentation (police accident report, doctors care letter, hospital admission, tow truck or car repair reciept for you or a member of your immediate family).
  • Final examinations must be taken at the official time scheduled for this class. Any exception must be apporved by the college provost. Failure to complete the Final exam will result in a grade for the course of Withdrawn-Failing (WF).

Procedure

Cell Phones

(Optional Statement) / Students are required to turn off all cell phones and pagers before the beginning of class. If a cell phone or pager vibrates or is audible, the student may be asked to turn it off or leave for the remainder of the class. If there is an emergency situation warranting the use of a cell phone or pager during class time, the student must notify the professor in writing prior to the beginning of class. During a testing situation, if a cell phone or pager vibrates or is audible, the student’s quiz, test, or examination will be collected and the student will be asked to leave without an option for completion.

Final Exam

/ All professors are required to give final examinations to all credit students (except those taking course work for audit) during the scheduled final examination period.
