Dear Parent:
Our school is using Discovery Education Assessment to help us target our teaching to the individual needs of your child. The assessments measure the state academic standards in each subject tested. The reports show your child’s overall performance on the subject and their performance on each standard within the subject. Our teachers will use this information to identify specific areas that may need additional attention.
Teachers can see how students are growing as their learning is monitored across each test. At the beginning of the year, some students will meet those expectations from the start. Most will not as they have not yet had the opportunity to learn the content from their teachers. As the year progresses, teachers will be able to see how students are getting closer to meeting, and exceeding, those expectations.
The enclosed report displays information about how your student performed on the assessment. This report includes the following four areas:
1) Growth: Comparison to School & District: This displays your child’s overall scale score on each of the assessments and also graphs the school and district average scale scores. The scale score can be used to track your child’s performance over time. The gray portion of the graph shows the range of scores that are considered Level 3. (Note: This report not available for all subject areas).
2) Overall Subject Summary: This shows your child’s scores for each test period. You can track your child’s performance over time to gauge improvement.
3) Performance by Skill: This shows the standards covered on the assessment, grouped by Reporting Category. The report shows your child’s performance in each Reporting Category or “Skill”. The report is color-coded to represent the percent of items your child answered correctly in each category. Please see the legend for “Percent Correct” at the top right of the report for color meaning.
4) Answers: This displays the test questions your child answered correctly or incorrectly on the test. A green checkmark indicates the question was answered correctly, a letter indicates an incorrect response, and a shaded box indicates the question was left blank.

Sincerely,
