Picks From the Shelf

Maya Linn, A Strong and Clear Vision – DVD – This is the story of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and its inspiring creator. After you watch this movie you will understand why it received an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Maya was 21 when her design was chosen among many for the memorial. Amidst controversy and opposition this memorial has become one of the most visited in the United States. Watching this movie and listening to Maya Linn’s interpretation will help to make your life richer. – Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.

Just Kids – Book – Written by Patti Smith. I understand why this book is on the New York Times best seller list. It is also a National Book Award Winner. This is an amazing raw story of Patti Smith and Robert Mappelthorpe’s journey on the rise to fame and stardom. I have to admit I really didn’t know who Patti Smith was until there was a special on PBS about her. What an intriguing individual I thought—I need to know more about her. So along comes this book called Just Kids. Here was the opportunity to learn more. She is very revealing and open in her writing. I will say there were a few images she shared about Robert that were “eyeball poppers” and I found myself thinking “alrighty then, that was too much information.” In all this revelation about their young life it is obvious she is writing truthfully from the heart and certainly nothing is clearer and more poetic than the source. I hope to read more of Patti Smith’s work. – Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The Epic Fall of the American Indian– DVD – HBO has created a wonderful masterpiece with this story. This movie is based on the book of the same name that is known as most likely the first authentic story to relate history from the Indians’ perspective. It has always been said that history is written by the victors. The Indians were not the victors in this case and the result has been a lop-sided incomplete history of America. This movie garnered 6 Emmy Awards including Outstanding Made for Television Movie. After watching the movie, go back and watch the interactive on-screen historical guide. It is chock full of great historical information. Absolutely amazing—a must watch movie. – Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.

The Orphan Trains, Placing Out in America – Book – Marilyn Irvin Holt has put a lot of research into this book. I happened to watch a program on PBS about the orphan trains. It was very interesting and I wanted to learn more so I asked about the subject in our library. This book is just one of the many books on this very subject. It is a part of American history that isn’t talked about too much. Like any history it is full of the good, the bad and the unfortunate. After reading this book it is apparent that placing out was the very beginnings of social justice for the young. It brought about change for the poor and destitute while also allowing indenture of young children, women and sometimes families. This is a complicated part of American history and one that deserves to be told. It is an amazing story. – Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.

Iron Jawed Angels – DVD – Hilary Swank, Frances O’Connor, Julia Ormond and Anjelica Huston star in this amazing true to life story of the fight for the right of women to vote. And what a story it is. This is absolutely a must see movie. You will not regret it. Anyone who watches this movie will cherish and value their right to vote and realize it isn’t something to disregard. – Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.

If you have a favorite book, movie or CD from our very own CSI library you would like to recommend to your co-workers, let me know about it. You don’t need to be a professional critic. All you need is two to four sentences giving info on why you think it is something folks might want to spend their time on. – Ann Keane, PACE newsletter editor, ext. 6530,

Hello, I was born and raised right here in Twin Falls, having graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1982. My wife Susan and I have four children; Matt, Beth, Andrew, and Austin. We are also the proud grandparents of 3 year old Madison.Susan and I spend as much time as possible with our horses riding and exploring the beautiful mountains and backcountry of Idaho. We enjoy hunting and camping, as well. We are members of the High Desert Backcountry Horsemen, a chapter of the national non-profit Back Country Horsemen of America, which advocates legislatively to keep our public lands open for stock and trail use. We work with the Forest Service and other public agencies on the ground, building and maintaining trails and trailheads.
