Think of the fact that kennel cough is like a cold to dogs. It is an upper respiratory infection that is called kennel cough because many times your pet contracts it at a kennel when they are in close contact with infected animals. In this case the only difference is that your dog is pregnant. You will obviously want to treat the symptoms.

The difference on whether you have to make a trip to the vet is whether your pregnant dog has a mild case or a severe case of kennel cough. I will list the symptoms and some treatment options. Imagine how much easier it will be if you can treat your dog at home and save a few bucks in the process.

SYMPTOMS OF KENNEL COUGH ARE:

  • Dry harsh cough
  • Gagging and/or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite

MORE SEVERE SYMPTOMS ARE:

  • Nasal discharge
  • Fever
  • Cough that produces phlegm
  • Depression
  • Green mucus

If your dog or cat has developed coughing with green mucus then take it to your vet right away. Treatment at the vet will most likely result in the use of antibiotics to clear up in the infection.

HOW TO TREAT KENNEL COUGH PREGNANT DOG

If your pregnant dog has a mild case of kennel cough then some home remedies can help your dog with the symptoms. Most cases of kennel cough last 1-2 weeks.

HONEY – A REALLY EFFECTIVE AND SAFE TREATMENT FOR DOG COUGH

You already know that honey has shown many medicinal properties over the years and has been found to be safe to use. In a recently released study is was found that using honey instead of cough syrups was more effective in stopping coughs than cough syrup.

A particular honey (manuka) is now being touted to be the most effective of all honeys. It is made from the flowers on tea bushes and comes from New Zealand. It is reported to also be effective against super bug bacteria that antibiotics won’t touch. It is very expensive though so any honey will work fine.

An average dog can be given ½ to 1 teaspoon of honey from three to four times a day. The honey is a safe natural treatment and will reduce the coughing which will promote sleep in your dog and let you get a good night’s rest at the same time.

OTHER HELPFUL THINGS YOU CAN DO

  • Loosen collars – your pet’s throat is sore and irritated.
  • Many pet owners are using herbal teas to help with the cough. These are made from peppermint leaves or from wild cherry bark. Drops of the tea are being given every few hours to stop the cough
