Textbooks

Holt-MacDougal Literature 7

Interactive Reader (workbook)

Ø  No textbooks are issued for my class. A class set of textbooks are kept in my room.

Materials

Ø  Three-ring binder (1” - 1 ½”)(preferably for English only)

Ø  Composition Notebook (to be kept in classroom)

Ø  Loose-leaf paper (preferably wide-ruled)

Ø  Dividers for three-ring binder (3)

Ø  Blue or black ink pens

Ø  Other colored pens for grading (red, purple, green)

Ø  Highlighters (4 different colors)

Ø  White-Out correction tape (optional – No liquid paper)

Literature Units

Ø  The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963

Ø  Phantom of the Opera

Ø  A Christmas Carol

Ø  The Outsiders

Ø  Assorted short stories, expository texts & poetry from the literature book

40 Book Challenge

Ø  You will be strongly encouraged to read 40 books of your choosing this year.

Ø  Students that meet the expectations will receive a reward/celebration at the end of the year.

Ø  Library: You will check out TWO books. You will be able to take home one book, but the other book MUST remain at school.

Ø  You need to bring a book that you are reading for enjoyment to EVERY class period. You will be expected to pick up your book and read at the following times:

Ø  Warm-ups

Ø  When my phone rings

Ø  When I’m interrupted by visitors

Ø  When I’m conferencing with students individually

Ø  When you are finished with your assignments

Ø  When we return from library visits

Evaluation Procedures

Ø  Students will be expected to write legibly.

Ø  Written work in final draft format must be neat and legible, written in blue or black ink with the margin on appropriate side of the notebook paper.

Ø  Typed writing assignments/projects must be typed in 12-point Times New Roman with one inch margins.

Ø  Papers must have a proper and complete heading at all times:

o  Student First name Last name

o  Mrs. Phelps

o  Reading 7-3 (Grade-Period)

o  Month Day Year (August 24, 2015)

Ø  NO copies of assignments will be accepted. Plagiarism of any kind is NOT tolerated & will be subject to disciplinary consequences.

Ø  Content, punctuation, grammar, spelling, and form are standards of grading all written work.

Grading Categories and Weights

o  Assignments (homework, class work, and some quizzes) 40%

o  Tests, Final Drafts, Projects & most quizzes 60%

Homework, Late Work, and Make-up Work

Ø  All school policies regarding tardies, absences, late work, make-up work, and zeroes will be followed according to The Student Code of Conduct.

Ø  Students are given ONE day to complete work for each day absent. All make-up work is the responsibility of the student; arrangements must be made outside of instructional time.

Ø  If a student is not absent, late work receives an automatic Zero Assignment Detention.

Ø  A major project/paper is assigned at least ONE week in advance; therefore, the student is responsible for having the assignment in on time. Late Projects will be subject to disciplinary consequences.

Behavioral Expectations

Ø  Be in your seat and ready to work when the tardy bell RINGS.

Ø  Be prepared with all supplies.

Ø  Be respectful of other people and their belongings.

Ø  Keep the classroom neat and clean, no gum or candy.

Ø  Sleeping or other disruptive behavior in the classroom will result in disciplinary consequences.

One of my classroom goals is to provide a comfortable environment for inquiry and learning; therefore, I expect all students to respect authority, peers, and property as well as exercise tolerance of others.
