4WB GRADE FOUR SURVIVAL GUIDE

1)4WB Wiki - The class wiki posts all homework, projects, notices, important dates, downloadable copies of handouts, and my contact information. Simply go to the school web site, click on “Parent”, then click on “Mr. Birt’s Fab Fours”.

2)Agenda- The agenda is to keepyour child organized and you informed. The agenda is written by your child, signed by me, and includes homework, notices, and important dates. Please read and sign your child’s agenda daily. School papers will be in the front clear pocket. You can write in it a reminder, notice or questions for me if required.

3)Homework–Homework includes unfinished daily work for which adequate time has been allowed in class, special projects, studying for tests, daily reading, and math facts practice. Homework is recorded in your child’s agenda daily and posted on the 4WB wiki. Everything needed to complete the work will be sent home. In the event that your child falls behind in assignments, needs reminders to bring gym clothes, library books etc. or needs assistance from home, a note will be written in the agenda.

4)Spelling/Word Study- Lessons are assigned on Friday and the words recorded in the agenda. All work is done in class and the spelling test is on the following Friday (or the last day of the week). The tests will come home Friday to be signed. Your child will have enough class time to complete all of the spelling activities in class.Reviewing the words on Thursday evening may be beneficial.

5)Home Reading - At the grade 4 level, 20 minutes of home reading daily will greatly benefit your child’s fluency and comprehension. This includes a child reading independently, reading aloud, and being “read to”. Discussing the reading afterwards with your child will also enhance comprehension.

6)Assessment –Assessments will be on-going and assignments will be communicated outlining the expectations, due dates, and a “rubric” for assessment. Reminders for due dates will be written by your child in the agenda and posted on the 4WB wiki.

7)Home Communication–Regular communication is through the agenda, the wiki, email, or by telephone. Use any of these to contact me, if you wish to arrange an appointment. I am available most days after school or before 8:30 a.m.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me by phone at 261-9535 (extension 1527), in person, through your child’s agenda, or by e-mail at (I read e-mails every morning and at the end of every day).

Sincerely, Mr. Birt
