Teachers and or students

Required Personal Protective Equipment: CSA approved safety glasses or goggles, CSA approved steel-toed footwear, 100% cotton coveralls preferred, and hearing protection required in confined space/area and /or per RETSD policy.

GENERAL NOTES: No lighters, matches or cell phones are allowed in the shop area. Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long hair should be tied back. Strings and hoods hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed or tucked inside of coveralls.

1 / Select material to be sheared from material rack and carry or roll to NC Shear. Aluminum is typically hand carried, steel is typically rolled on material cart. / Back Injury
Cut / Lifting techniques two people for handling larger more cumbersome pieces of material. Gloves for hand protection from burrs on metal.
2 / Turn main power off. Set dimension of shear depth (width of cut) Dimension is controlled electronically. / N/A / N/A
3 / Move material onto shear bench and push material up against shear guide. / Back Injury

4 / Turn main and machine power on. Cut material. Shear Blade is activated by depressing guarded foot switch / Crush
Cut / Permanent Machine Guard protects operators fingers from getting close to Shear Blade.
5 / Turn main and machine power to off position. Material that has been cut is collected off of cart at rear of machine and carried or rolled to next operation or back to material rack. / Back Injury
Cut / Lifting techniques two people for handling larger more cumbersome pieces of material. Gloves to protect hands from burrs on material. Training workers in proper lifting techniques. Training in the operation and maintenance of the NC Shear should be mandatory for all machine shop employees.
