Article 25

(1) Mentor of a PhD candidate may be a person who is an employee of the School of Medicine University of Zagreb or holds a title of scientific and teaching positions at the School, provided that he/she :
holds an assistant professor or research associate (or higher rank ), or an equivalent rank , if the potential mentor earned an academic rank abroad;
is an active researcher in the area related to the topic of the doctoral research,proved by: ( a) that he/she is a head of a domestic or international project, or an active collaborator on this project at the time of submission of the PhD thesis proposal, ( b ) that he/she has published internationally recognized papers relevant to the topic of the doctoral researchin the last five years, (as evidenced by printing the data from the Web of Science database)
(2) Professor Emeritus and a regular member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts can be mentors to PhD candidates, especially if they are still active heads of research projects which is decided by the Faculty Council upon the recommendation of the PhD thesis Board.
(3) An employee of the School may be co - mentor on the other school or faculty of the University of Zagreb or another university only with prior permission of the School.

Article 28

(1) The mentor is required to assist the PhD candidate during the research leading to the PhD thesis, monitor the quality of PhD candidate’s work, encourage the publication of his/her papers and allow full participation in scientific projects. The same applies to co - mentor, who is responsible for the approved part of the research.

(2) The primary responsibility for the publication of papers in which the PhD candidate is co - author is the responsibility of the mentor, who is expected to keep at least average scientific productivity in the course of the PhD research(at least one publication per year in international peer-reviewed journals indexed in the database WoS). The average five-year period in which the PhD candidate is expected to complete his/her PhD thesis is a period in which the mentor is expected to publish:

at least five papers (in journals listed in the database WoS ) and thereby ensure that the PhD candidate is a co-author on at least three of those five papers or

 at least one paper in the journal with quartile 1 (Q1) or quartile 2 (Q2) ranking, in which he/she is the first or last author and PhD candidate co-author.
(3) The mentor is required to submit an Annual mentor's report on the doctoral candidate's progress to the Faculty council for postgraduate studies on the appropriate forms. Prior to the appointment of mentor, the report is submitted by the study adviser.
