Becoming a Governor
The College’s Governing Body has a membership of 16 people including the Principal and Staff/Student Governors. Governors are appointed, initially, for a four-year period of office (excepting Student Governors who are usually appointed for a period of one academic year). At the end of this period, they may be appointed for one further four-year term.
The external members are drawn from a range of backgrounds including business, local government and the voluntary sector. On appointment, Governors sit on the full Governing Body and some Governors also sit on one of the Committees (Audit, Search and Governance, Student Liaison and Performance and Remuneration).
College Governors are unpaid, voluntary positions although appropriate expenses are payable.
Training and Support
The College is very aware that both new, and existing Governors, should have access to a full programme of training and support to enable them to discharge their responsibilities effectively and with confidence.
The Governance Adviser and Clerk to the Corporation, Craig Williams, will take all new members through an induction process using nationally-devised materials.
In collaboration with the College management and administration staff, Craig also facilitates Governor training events during the year. Recent events have included Safeguarding, Prevent, FE benchmarking and National Leadership of Governance.
Personal qualities required to be a Governor
The College seeks diversity in terms of the background of its Governors. However, there is an expectation that all prospective Governors would share the following characteristics:
•A real interest in education and training
•Skills and experience that will benefit the College
•A commitment to act as an advocate for the College and to act in the best interests of the College at all times
•A commitment to working with integrity, openness and honesty
