Services Provided for Military/Veteran Students and Military Family Members at Southern Illinois University Carbondale

  1. GI Bill Educational Benefit Processing: We have trained personnel who can assist with submitting initial application, counseling on benefits and eligibility and we process the enrollment certifications necessary for benefits to be awarded each semester.

  9. Apply for GI Bill Educational Benefits at

  11. Update enrollment information anytime courses are added or dropped and when you register for classes in subsequent semesters by contacting the School Certifying Official.
  12. Federal Tuition Assistance: You may be eligible for up to 16 credit hours per fiscal year, limited to $250 per credit to pay tuition cost.

  21. Illinois Veterans Grant: Eligibility is based on 12 months of active federal service, entered service form Illinois and returned to Illinois within 6 months of separation. Benefit provides tuition and mandatory fee waiver for equivalent of undergraduate degree (120 semester hours) which may be used for undergraduate or graduate study.

  30. Illinois National Guard Grant: Eligibility is based on service in Illinois National Guard. Benefit provides tuition waiver for equivalent of undergraduate degree (120 semester hours) which may be used for undergraduate or graduate study. After 10 years of service, you may be eligible for an additional 60 semester hours.

  38. Indicate you plan to use National Guard Grant when completing Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA).
  39. You Must re-apply each academic year during the summer.

  41. Illinois MIA/POW Scholarship: Eligibility is for dependents of Illinois Veterans who have been rated 100% permanently service connected disabled by VA. Benefit provides a tuition waiver for 120 credit hours.

  50. Medical Care: Veterans may be eligible for care by VA Medical Center in Marion, IL which operates a Community Based Outreach Clinic in Carbondale. On Campus students are eligible for care at Student Health Services. Care includes mental health care and counseling services.
