Surrealism- Photo Merging (in class assignment)

1. Find two photographs that interest you in design and subject matter. The Photo’s that you select will be eventually combined in one form or another.

2. Scanned, Photographed, or pulled from the web. But one of these photographs must be your own work.... 25 points will be deducted from your overall score if both images are not yours.

3. Open a new screen in PhotoShop… set the canvas size to no larger than 8x10 or 10 x 8 screen (no smaller then 8x8 inches).

4. Paste in your first photo.

5. Open your second photo and select the area (areas) you are planning to use.

6. Copy the selected area. Open your project and paste the image in where you wish it to merge in.

7. AT this point, you will alter the two images using the various tools taught to you. Mostly, you will use the “eraser” tool at different opacity settings and possibly even different brush settings. Try to preserve the images’ original look as much as possible. You may also choose to include a third photo (or something cut out from a third photo) to complete the overall composition. But try not to create a “cut and paste” looking work of art. Merging is the most important process for this assignment

Objective- The final image will appear dream like…Surrealistic. It can not possibly exists in reality, (Ex. Cruise ship traveling across a wooden bedroom floor... the floor appearing like water, near the ship).

The final image needs to be a strong composition as well as an interesting subject matter. Carefully examine the use of contrast. If you need to adjust the “levels”, do so (“image”/ adjust).

The final image must have an area that has been “merged” together… not just added into the photo. Parts of the image added will blend into another photo. YOU SHOULD NOT USE THE “BLUR” TOOL ACCOMPLISH THIS…. or the stamp tool.

8. Transform the image to fit the screen either left to right, or top to bottom, by connecting both layers, then use “transform”/scale.

9. Crop off the portion of the canvas not being used.

10. Save your file to your workspace, then make a copy of it (with your name on it) and place it in my drop box…. “ Surrealism/Photo merging”
