House -- 2-D Orthographic Drawings and Dimensioning

Objective: To explore and learn how to make and dimension orthographic drawings.

Tasks:

1. Create three orthographic views of the outside surfaces of a house of your design. The three standard views will be "Plan", "Front Elevation", and "Right Side Elevation". Start a blank drawing in model space. Create limits from 0, 0 to 100, 60, zoom all. Toggle GRID (set to 0.5 ft spacing), SNAP, and ORTHO.

2. The house must meet the following standards:

a. The floor plan must be an "L" or "T" shape, not a simple rectangle, with an area for a 2-car garage. The exterior walls are to be made of concrete block, drafted as 6" wide. The roof edges shall also be drafted as 6" thick in a vertical direction.

b. The overall square foot of enclosed space must be at least 2000 square feet (measured to outside of exterior walls).

c. Two 2 ft diameter circular "chimneys" made of thin metal must be placed on the roof's exterior, extending above the peak of the roof.

d. Holes must be "cut" in the exterior walls for doors and windows: 1 double garage door – 20 ft wide by 8 ft tall, 2 standard entry doors – 3' wide by 7' tall, min 4 standard windows -- 3 ft wide x 4 ft high holes, and 2 bathroom windows – 3 ft wide by 1 ft tall holes. You may place theses doors and windows on any face that you desire.

3. The roof must have a "pitch" less than 45 degrees, for example 5:12, or 6:12, or 7:12, or 8:12. You pick it.

4. Place features on the "normal" surface and use "miter lines" and projection lines to construct other views of the same features. Place miter and projection lines on a separate layer.

5. Identify "hidden lines", and show these with a thin dashed line on a separate layer. Identify "visible lines" and show these on a separate layer.

6. Dimension the house following the tutorial examples.

7. Use a paper space template you previously constructed, or make a simple border/title block for a new Layout View. Insert your three dimensioned views of the house in the Layout View. Choose a convenient scale. Complete title block contents and save your drawing.

(1) A "talk to me" discussion of your process, successes, failures, problems, solutions, and observations typed into the comment box on the ELearning upload sheet. .

(2) Your *.dwg drawing uploaded.

Sample drawing: the following figure is a sample except we will do only three views (plan, front, right). Also, we will not include any interior walls or features, nor will we texture the outside surfaces. .
