Support for Personalized Learning

Updates: September 17, 2012

The following are changes or updates to the SPL system. Please note: At each school, BerkeleyCountycontinues to move the Framework of Support across the four growth stages of “Emerging, Developing, Operationalizing, and Optimizing.” This remains an on-going process.

You received 50 copies each of “A Parent’s Guide to Support for Personalized Learning (SPL)” and our official letter notifying parents of their student’s participation in Level 2, Targeted Instruction and Level 3, Intensive Instruction. It is important that you involve parents in the SPL process and keep copies of these letters. The more parents are actively involved at all levels, the greater the opportunity for student success.

The data summary sheets have been updated, also. Kindergarten has reading only; grades 1—11 now have Targeted Behavior and Intensive Behavior summaries on the back; grades 3—8 also now have Written Expression summaries on the back. We can have copies made via the Print Shop.

If after 4 weeks a student remains in Targeted Instruction supports and appears not to be making adequate progress toward proficiency, a folder documenting the types of materials being used and some strategic examples of student work demonstrating types of progress and targeted remedial areas needs to be started. The Data Summary sheets and other documentation need to remain with that folder. This information is essential to further options within the SPL system and to a receiving school should the student transfer or be promoted to the next level (elementary, intermediate, middle, high). Each receiving level is requesting more information about the specific targeted skills (and materials) that students worked on while in the SPL process the year prior to their arrival.

Every school in BerkeleyCounty is now participating in Support for Personalized Learning. Special Education students are participants in the SPL system when their IEP does not contain specific goals addressing reading, math, written expression, or behavior. The IEP team may decide to include those additional goals. If the student has no disability in those areas, the student may receive necessary supports in those areas via the SPL Instructional supports within that school. Obviously, 100% of students receive Level 1, Core Instructional support.

We will continue to refine the necessary specifics for each level of Written Expression support. For now, WV Writes is the prescribed instructional support.

There is much information about Support for Personalized learning at:

Pre-teaching is a more effective practice than re-teaching.

Reminder: Interventionist funding is on a year-to-year basis. What is your alternate plan if that funding stops?

SPL is not a place. The only difference in the 3 Levels is that we increase the “Intensity” of the support. Always keep in focus: Core = 100%, Targeted = 10-15%, Intensive = 5% or less (of the students).
