Chapters 1 & 2, September 12, 2006

Partial credit will be LIBERAL, provided that you SHOW YOUR WORK!

Use back if necessary (please tell me that you have done so!)

Name: ______

1.  (6 points) Multiply 5.932 ´ 104 m/s by 9.5 ´ 10-2 s, taking into account significant figures. Express your answer using scientific (power of 10) notation!

2.  (24 points) At time t = 0 an object is thrown vertically upward at an initial velocity v0. It reaches a maximum height ymax = 20 m, measured from the initial point. (Hint: To solve this problem, take y0 = 0. It’s also easiest if up is positive & down is negative).

a.  Compute the initial velocity v0.

b.  Compute the time it takes to reach it’s maximum height.

c.  Compute the time it takes to return to the starting point and it’s velocity just before it hits the thrower’s hand.

d.  Compute the time when the velocity is 14 m/s upward.
