1.OVERALL OF TEACHING PRACTICUM.

1.1INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Education (Hon) program is aimed at preparing students to meet the demands and challenges of the teaching profession for both public and private educational institutions. Thus, the program provides an excellent opportunity for non-graduate teachers, school-leavers, and those interested in entering the teaching profession to be better equipped with a more solid command of the professional subject knowledge and skills required of an educator.

The program’s courses are structured so as to improve and enhance learners’ pedagogical abilities and teaching skills besides providing the necessary Malaysian schools’ subjects’ content knowledge. Graduates of the program will have an understanding of the history, philosophy, systems, practices and challenges of educational development. The program will enable scholars to master competencies, curriculum planning, aspects of an educational institution management, and development of the profession.

1.2TEACHING PRACTICUM

Teaching Practicum is an important component in the Bachelor of Education (Hon) program. It provides opportunities for students to apply and to reflect on educational theories, skills, professional values and put theories into practices in actual situation in and outside the classroom as well as to come up with new teaching and learning theories. Important components in the Teaching Practicum:

1.2.1Observation, orientation and teaching preparation in primary school.

1.2.2Observation, orientation and teaching preparation in secondary school.

1.2.3Actual teaching and other involvements in and outside the classroom.

1.3THE OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING PRACTICUM

The objectives of the teaching practicum are as follows:

1.3.1Prepare students physically, mentally and emotionally for the rigors of work as a teacher in school

1.3.2 Develop student’s individual maturity, self-awareness, self-confidence asa

teacher through constructions of portfolio, self reflection and evaluation.

1.3.3Familiarize students with some structured practical experience of the teaching and learning activities inside and outside the classroom.

1.3.4Enable students to exercise and acquire effective interpersonal, communication and facilitating skills in school.

1.3.5Enable students to put into practice their academic knowledge and skills acquired and being able to identify and solve teaching and learning complications in school.

1.3.6To inculcate positive values, maintain high moral standards and to internalized and implement the teaching professional ethic.

1.3.7Master the different strategies, planning and implementation of curricular and co-curricular activities.

1.3.8Maximum the usage of different resources available for the implementation of teaching and learning.

1.4REGISTRATION FOR TEACHING PRACTICUM

Before the students are eligible to undergo teaching or counseling practicum, they must complete the following courses.

1.4.4Once the students are eligible, they need to follow the proper procedures. Planning

has to start at least in the semester prior to the one in which the teaching practicum

will take place. For example, if a students wish to do teaching practicum in

Semester January 2009 then planning must start in mid semester August 2008.

1.4.5Students are not allowed to withdrawal from undergoing teaching practicum once

they are registered for it.

1.5GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR THE PRACTICUM

1.5.1The Faculty of Education and Social Sciences will identify studentseligible to undergo teaching practicum. The list of students eligibleto undergo teaching practicum will be given to Sabah Regional Centre one semester prior to

their practicum. The timeline for the teaching practicum will also be

provided.

1.5.2Eligible students are required to fill in the Teaching Practicum Registration Form (Refer to APPENDIX T). The completed registration form must be submitted to the Executive, Industrial Training for Education, Sabah Regional Centre prior to

their training. Please make sure that all important details

such as hand phone number, telephone number, telephone number for the school

must be provided.

1.5.3The Executive, Industrial Training for Education will collect all the completed

practicum registration forms. A copy of the registration form will be forwarded

to theFaculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kelana Jaya. The original

copywill be kept at the Sabah Regional Centre for future reference.

1.5.4The Executive, Industrial Training for Education will compile the complete list of

the primary and secondary schools that the students proposed to undergo their

teaching practicum

1.5.5The Executive, Industrial Training for Education need to approach the Principal

or Deputy Principal to get the approval for the teaching practicum placement. If

the Mathematics Major student apply for School A but the Principal needs

Commerce students, the Executive needs to get the Mathematics student to

find another school.

1.5.6Upon confirmation from the school, the Executive needs to send a letter to the

school to confirm the students teaching practicum placement.

1.5.7The students willundergoing their teaching practicum in schoolsin according

to the Practicum Timeline provided by the faculty.

1.5.8 Students will be visitedand assessed by the lecturer / academic supervisor from the centre and from the facultyat least twice during their practicum.( Refer to Garis Panduan Praktikum prepared by UNITAR Kelana Jaya).

1.5.9The students need to send their teaching timetable to the Executive, Industrial

Training for Education.If there are any changes on the timetable, students need to

update the Executive as soon as possible. A copy of the summarized timetable

will be sent to the faculty for reference and actions.

1.5.7Students need to submit their teaching practicum report to their respective lecturer or supervisor for assessment, one week after their teaching practicum.

1.6DURATION OF TEACHING PRACTICUM

1.6.1 Teaching Practicum will be conducted during the January and May / Jun Semester.

1.6.2 The teaching practicum will be on for 14 weeks as shown below.However the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences reserves the right to adjust the dates and duration accordingly.

OBSERVATION (ROS) IN PRIMARY SCHOOL / ORIENTATION AND PREPARATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOL / TEACHING PRACTICUM IN SECONDARY SCHOOL / PREPARING TEACHING PRACTICUM REPORT
One week observation in primary school / On week orientation in secondary school / At least 10 weeks of actual teaching / One week to prepare teaching practicum report

1.7ATTACHMENT ARRANGEMENT

1.7.1The location of the school is important to students,especially those who depend

on public transportation.Safetyand security are other issues related to location.

1.7.2Students are invited to propose schools near to the semester address.

1.7.3The location of the schoolsmust be CONVENIENTto both the students, and lecturers to do teaching observation.

1.7.4It is preferred that only TWO students are allowed to be attached in one school.

1.7.5 The Faculty of Education and Social Sciences reserves the right to assign

students to a school or institution as necessary.

1.8 ATTACHMENT CONFIRMATION.

1.8.1Students need to confirm the place of their teaching practicum not less than a month before the training begins.

1.8.2The confirmation of the teaching practicum attachment is done once the student

submits the registration formto the Executive, Industrial Training for Education.

1.8.3Every teaching practicum student will be assigned to a lecturer / academic supervisor from theregional center. The name of the lecturer /academic supervisor will be announced during the teaching practicum briefing.

1.9ROLE OF ACADEMIC SUPERVISOR

1.9.1The Academic Supervisor is a mentor and an advisor who develops a professional

and interpersonal relational relationship with the students that is conducive to scholarly activities and intellectual enhancement.

1.9.2The Academic Supervisor is directly responsible for the supervision of the

Student’steaching practicum. The supervisor provides counsel for all aspects of the program, and stays informed of the student’s scholarly activities and progress.

1.9.3The Academic Supervisor has responsibilities related to overseeing the student

Teaching Practicum program:

ATo maintain contact with the student through mutually agreed upon

regular meetings and for consultation as needed.

BTo review student’s logs to assure that the internship is providing

meaningful experience according to the internship objectives.

CTo monitor student’s attendance, performance and discipline in school

throughout the teaching practicum.

E To check student’s portfolio - lesson notes, lesson plans, teaching

resources used, etc and give the necessary recommendations for their

continuous improvement.

FTo supervise and assessed student’s actual teaching in the classroom based

on the timetable assigned.(refer to APPENDIX N)

GTo discuss with students concerning their self awareness, self confidence,

interpersonal communication skills, good values and their ethical

professional conducts.

HInform in writing to the Management of Regional Centre cases that need

their attentions and actions.

1.10THE ROLES OF SCHOOL MENTOR

1.10.1The school / institution will assigna mentor to assist and guide the student.

1.10.2The Roles of the School Mentors are as follows:

ATo assist and guide students concerning the following:

* Time table

* Syllabus, curriculum specification, and teachers’ guide book.

* Preparing weekly and daily teaching plan and teaching notes.

* Teaching and learning resources available.

* Teaching and learning approaches, strategies and techniques.

* Classroom management

* Organizing co-curricular activities

* Other related matters.

BInvite student to observe his / her teaching

CTo check and guide student on ways to improve lesson plan preparation.

D.To observe and assess student’s teaching at least twice during the beginning part of the practicum and one more towards the end. School mentors are allowed to observe student as and when necessary.

ETo assess student performance using Mentor Assessment Form (APPENDIX M) and sent it to the Executive, Industrial Training for Education.

F.To monitor and to inform the school and Sabah Regional Centre concerning the student’s attendance and discipline at school.

  1. To guide student towards the development of good professional character,

self confidence, acquiring effective interpersonal communication skills,

and good moral values.

1.11RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENT

1.11.1The student must accept the rules, procedures and standards in placed in the

program at UNITAR, Sabah Regional Centre and is expected to check the

Academic Calendar, Practicum Training Timeline and any related documents for

regulations regarding academic and non-academic matters.

1.11.2Students have the following responsibilities:

ATo make a commitment and to show dedicated efforts to gain the

background knowledge and skills needed to pursue and complete the

Teaching Practicum.

BTo develop in conjunction with the Academic Supervisor and School

Mentor a plan and a timetable for the completion of all stages of the

training, and to adhere to a schedule to meet he appropriate deadlines.

CTo maintain contact with the School Supervisor / Mentor through mutually

agreed upon regular communication and be reasonably available for

consultation as needed.

DTo keep the Academic Supervisor, School Supervisor and the Executive of

Industrial Training for Education informed concerning changes in your

personal circumstances in as much as they may affect your work or make

it difficult for them to contact you.

ETo give serious consideration to and respond professionally to the advice

and comments received from the School Supervisor and the other member

of the supervisory committee.

FTo recognize that the School Supervisor and other members of the

supervisory committee may have other job and service obligations, which

may preclude immediate responses.

GTo address situations that is not working, students may deal directly with

the School Supervisor so that dissatisfactions, issues, and other conflicts

can be resolved. If for any reason the situation cannot be resolved, the

student may consult with the Executive, Industrial Training for Education

on how to proceed.

HTo demonstrate professional conduct by adhering to the Teacher Code of

Ethics.

ITo comply with procedures, policies, and regulations of the school /

institution.

1.12REPORT DUTY AT PRACTICUMCENTER

1.12.1Students are required to report at the teaching practicum center as directed in the attachment letter, issued by the Sabah Regional Centre a day earlier.

1.12.2Upon reporting, students are required to bring along the following:

AAttachment letter from UNITAR to undergo teaching practicum / teaching

observation (to be given to the Principal or Head Master of the school)

BUNITAR Student’s ID card / name tag.

CCurriculum Vitae / Resume

1.12.3Students need to inform the Executive, Industrial Training for Education if occur

changes in the practicum center address / changes in the home address or contact

information.

1.13CHANGE OF TEACHING PRACTICUM CENTRE.

1.13.1Students are NOT ALLOWED to change their teaching practicum center once

confirmation has been made with the Executive and the Faculty. To ensure

problems are solved amiably, students should discuss any arising matters with

regards to their attachment with the school or institution they are attached to.

1.13.2Any students found to have changed their teaching practicum centers without

proper written authorization from the Executive and the Faculty will be

considered as disobeying the regulation / teaching practicum ethics and will be

barred from undergoing the practicum and consequently be ordered to repeat the

teaching practicum in the following semester.

1.13.3The Faculty will only consider a change to the practicum center with the presence

of a medical certificate for medical reasons.

1.14ETHICAL CONDUCT DURING TEACHING PRACTICUM

Students must adhere to the following rules and regulation during teaching practicum.

1.14.1 Discipline and Regulations

AIt is the duty of the student to show constant high self-discipline and

conduct that truly represents the disposition of a UNITAR student while

undergoing teaching practicum or when he/she is outside the school or

institution.

  1. Every student must perform his / her teaching practicum with full dedication

and concentration.

CEvery student must obey and respect his / her School Supervisor

throughout the program. He / She must also abide by the rules and
