Job Purpose: To lead research inan area of Applied Mathematics in line with the strategy of the Applied Mathematics group; to enhance the research profile of Mathematics at the University of Southampton through undertaking internationally leading research, obtaining substantial research funding from diverse sources and supervising research staff and students; to contribute to the development and delivery of high quality teaching, to provide academic leadership.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (6-10 bullet points maximum)
  • Undertake internationally leading research in an area of Applied Mathematicsleading to publication of results in top international journals. Lead major funding bids, securing substantial research funding and attracting high-quality research staff and PhD students. Develop interactions with current and future members of the Applied Mathematics Group.
  • Develop and deliver research-led teaching of the highest quality across a range of modules through lectures, tutorials and seminars. Set and mark coursework and exams providing constructive feedback to students.
  • Supervision of MPhil/PhD students.
  • Provide expert advice and subject leadership to colleagues, students and external bodies. Oversee staff teams and resource management processes and develop collaborative partnerships in support of research. Contribute to the effective management and administration of the School of Mathematics by performing duties allocated by the Head of Academic Unit.
  • Any other duties that fall within the scope of the post as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder.

Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships)
  • The post holder will develop collaborative relationships in research and teaching with academic staff within the University and nationally and internationally.
  • Teaching, management, administration and other duties will be assigned by the Head of Academic Unit in consultation with the Head of the Applied Mathematics Group.
  • The post holder will be a member of relevant committees.

Special Requirements:
To attend national and international conferences for the purpose of disseminating research results.
To apply to funding bodies for grants, etc.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
Significant national/international reputation for academic excellence in Applied Mathematics.
PhD in Mathematics or equivalent
Track record of research leadership in Applied Mathematics
Track record of successfully obtaining research funding.
Track record of excellence in teaching mathematics at university level.
Ability to deliver high-quality teaching, including the supervision of PhD students and interdisciplinary teaching to mathematics, science and engineering students / X
