PSAT / National Merit / Shakespeare’s List

SCAVENGER HUNT

This assignment should be submitted using MLA format.

1.  Answers to the following questions may be found in the “STUDENT” section of the College Board website www.collegeboard.com.

2.  Create your own account to begin and then enter the site.

a.  What is the question and answer to today’s Official SAT Question of the Day? (Be sure to include the date of your visit.)

b.  What date will the PSAT be given at Allen High School this year?

c.  Which of “the most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT” do you think is most important? Explain your response. (FYI, these are listed on the “About PSAT/NMSQT” page)

d.  Find and print a copy of the College Campus Visit Checklist. Highlight the suggestions that will be of particular importance to you when conducting your college visits.

e.  Explain the difference between “Early Decision” and “Early Action.”

3.  Answers to the following questions may be found at http://www.nationalmerit.org:

a.  What does “PSAT/NMSQT” stand for?

b.  Name the three (3) types of Merit Scholarships awarded to finalists. What scholarships, if any, are available for non-finalists?

c.  Approximately how many students are “Recognized” by the National Merit Scholarship Program?

d.  How many of these become “Commended” students? Semifinalists? Finalists?

e.  Print a copy of The Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists in order to become a NMS Finalist. (There are 4 pages.) Read through the material and highlight any information useful to you.

4.  Find the copy of “The Shakespeare List” of PSAT/SAT words on my website under the Phoenix Vocabulary tab.

How many words are included in this list? Peruse the list and write down at least ten words with their definitions that you would like to be able to use fluently in your writing and speech.
