for the protection and safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Off Campus Robberies

The ESF University Police have become aware of the following string of Off Campus Robberies as detailed in Syracuse University Public Safety Notices published on their website at

Two students reported to the Syracuse Police Department that they were accosted in two separate off campus instances on Monday night and Tuesday morning by an unknown group of males in a dark

blue Pontiac sedan. The first incident, a Robbery, occurred in the 100 block of Redfield Place on Monday,

11/1/2010 at 10:45 pm. In that instance, a student reports that he was approached by three male suspects, who got out of a dark colored sedan and demanded money from the victim. The victim gave the suspects an undetermined amount of money. The suspects also took the victim’s laptop computer. The suspects then got into the dark colored sedan and left the area last seen south on Maryland Avenue. The victim was not injured.

In a second incident that occurred in the 700 block of Clarendon Street on Tuesday, 11/2/2010 at 6:30 am, a student reported that he was approached by three male suspects in a dark blue sedan and demanded money from the victim, the victim gave the suspects an undetermined amount of money.

The suspects then left the area last seen south on Maryland Avenue. The victim was not injured in this second incident.

DPS asks your help in identifying the suspect if you were in the vicinity at the time of these incidents. For this purpose, the following is the description of the suspects -- who appeared to be the same suspects in both cases: 3 males, black, late teens to early 20’s, 5’7” to 5’8” tall, 140 lbs, last seen

wearing: dark colored clothing. 4th suspect driving vehicle, unknown male, black, no further description.

Three people, none of them affiliated with the University, reported to the Syracuse Police Department that they were accosted in two separate off campus instances Sunday morning by an unknown man who possessed what could have been a handgun. The first incident, an Attempt Robbery, occurred at the intersection of Ostom Avenue and Madison Street at 3:25 AM. In that instance, a man reports that he was approached by a man who demanded money and who may have possessed what

appeared to be a handgun. The victim did not possess any valuables and the suspect left the area on foot

north on Ostrom Avenue. The victim was not injured. In a second incident that occurred on the 500 block of Allen Street at 4:40 AM, two people report that they were approached by a man who pointed an unknown object at them and demanded money. The victims gave the suspect an undetermined

amount of money and the suspect fled the area on foot heading southbound towards Harvard Place. Neither

victim was injured in this second incident.

DPS asks your help in identifying the suspect if you were in the vicinity at the time of these incidents. For this purpose, the following is the description of the suspect -- who appeared to be the same man in both cases: male, white, 5’8” tall, 160 lbs, last seen wearing: a hooded ‘Syracuse’ sweatshirt blue or green in color and blue jeans. The suspect also matches the description of the suspect in the robbery occurred in ThorndenPark on October 27, 2010 at 9:45 AM and reported under DPS # 10-33223.

THURSDAY – 10/28/10 – 9:45 AM – ThorndenPark

Two students report that they were approached and robbed at 9:45 AM while walking through ThorndenPark near the amphitheater. The students state that the unknown suspect approached

them, displayed what appeared to be a black revolver and stole property consisting of an orange backpack and a large green purse. The suspect was last seen fleeing on foot through the park towards the water tower where he may have then left the area in a newer model blue Chevrolet Impala.

DPS asks your help in identifying the suspect if you were in the vicinity at the time of this incident. For this purpose, the following is the description of the suspect: male, white, 25-33 years of age, 5’7” tall, 160 lbs., black hair, last seen wearing: a blue hooded ‘Syracuse’ sweatshirt, blue sweatpants with the legend ‘Syracuse’ down the leg, and a black cloth skull cap.

Safety Tips:

  • Use Centro Bus or taxi service.
  • Walk, bike or jog in groups of three or more-away from bushes, cars and other objects a suspect could hide behind.
  • Look and listen. Headphones and cell phones can create tunnel vision.
  • Travel in well-lighted and well-traveled areas.
  • Don't approach strangers or let them get close to you.
  • If you think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street. Go toward an open business or lighted house.
  • Have your house or car keys in hand before you reach your door.
  • Know where "Blue Light" phones are and how to use them.
  • If someone tries to rob you, don't resist. Give up your property, not your life.
