News from 2nd Grade!
It’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of our
first quarter!
We have a great class! Ienjoy working, talking,
laughing, & watching them grow each
day!
Here are some reminders for you:
Keep up the great job reading and turning in the reading minutes folders on Friday. A fewhave alreadyreached their1,000 minute reading goal and someare getting close!
Marvelous Math
Skills we will be focusing on this month:
Understanding place value, counting numbers on a number grid, fact families, open response story problems, problem solving (addition and subtraction), fluency in addition and subtraction facts, counting number patterns, greater than/less than/equal to, and expanded notation
Technology
We will be using the “Typing Pal” program in the computer lab to teach correct positioning of our fingers for keyboarding skills.We also use the computer lab for STAR readingassessments, Raz-kids and other online reading sites, phonics reinforcement, and to practice our math on everydaymathonline. In class, students interact with the Smartboard and document camera daily. We will use our classroom laptop computers for research and word work activities.
Reading, Phonics, Comprehension, & Language
Arts
We will continue working on our consonant clusters and vowel sounds in writing and reading, counting syllables, using our high frequency words correctly in sentences, making sentences using possessives, using commas in sentences, writing friendly letters, creative writing, contractions, nouns, verbs, adjectives, identifying main ideas, distinguishing between fact and opinion, use alphabetical skills, dictionary skills, and practice tracking our thinking while reading independently.
Social Studies
The students will continue learning about communities. We are also using maps, practicing using map keys, the compass rose, parts of a globe, using directions, and charting and graphing skills.
Writing
Students have time for writing every day. They recently picked their first books to publish and arein the process of editing. This month we will have lessons on sticking to the topic, focusing on capitalization and end punctuation, using logical order (beginning, middle, end), organizing our thoughts, and using our senses when we write and our imagination!
Land and Water
We have beenlearning about the water cycle. Students have been introduced to new vocabulary such as, evaporation, condensation, accumulation, and precipitation. Students are participating in hands on experiments as well as recording data in their Science Notebooks. This month we will also be learning about erosion and how water changes the shapes of landforms.

- October 7-14- Parent/teacher conferences: Times were listed on Progress Reports. Let me know if you need to know your time.
- Wednesday, October 14- No School: Parent/Teacher conference Day
- Thursday & Friday, October 15 & 16- No School: Fall Break
- Thursday, October 22- Report Cards go home.
- Tuesday, October 27- School picture retakes
- Thursday, October 29- Collaboration Day: School begins at 10:40.
- Friday, October 30- Differentiated Homework is due.
