THEME: The workshop "Building Bridges - Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for MAB BRs and other Designated Areas" offers capacity building to personnel of UNESCO/MAB Biosphere Reserves(BRs) and other kinds of Designated Areas (DAs) and/or Protected Areas on the added value of integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the activities designed for visitors to their Reserves or Parks (i.e. Schools, adult groups, individual visitors, etc.). The workshop is based, among others, on the new UNESCO /MEdIESpublication / training material on “ESD in MAB BRs and other designated areas in SE Europe and the Mediterranean”.
THE TARGET GROUP: The workshop targets all those staff with an interest in education & sensitization activities performed within a designated area, at formal or non-formal level. More specifically the workshop targets:
-Staff of Management Bodies of MAB BRs and other Designated Areas & Heritage Sites;
-Staff of NGOs or voluntary organizations that work in a BR or other Designated Area;
-Staff of Information Centers (Centers for Environmental Education, Regional Environmental Centers, etc) within any MAB BR or other Designated Area;
-Unemployed adults specialized in Management of Designated Areas;
-Adults from involved associated social groups and organizations (e.g. farmers’, women's associations, eco-tourism agents etc.);
-Municipality staff dealing with the management of a MAB BR or other kinds of PAs.
MAIN ACTIVITIES /AGENDA: The Workshop will provide training to the target group in an integrated way about the theory, history, and philosophy of ESD in any DA and give emphasis to the role of Biosphere Reserves as Learning Sites or “Laboratories” of ESD (through lectures, and practical workshops). In addition, the Workshop will provide the opportunity for participants from different countries to exchange experiences, and views on skills and good practices regarding the ESD in their (through round tables and group discussions). The workshop will highlight the fundamental conditions for the development of Sustainable Development (SD) in any DA and in particular the implementation of ESD programs as well through teaching modules (a special session on ICTs, fieldwork, discussions and workshops).
EXPECTED OUTCOMES /TRAINEES:
-To develop the skills of negotiation and cooperation in the non-formal education, locally relevant setting on how to apply ESD programs in any DA.
-To configure permanent bridges and networks of communication between the partner institutions from neighboring Mediterranean countries with similar ecosystems and environmental threats at local, national and regional level (through MIO-ECSDE, and MEdIES
-To contribute to the implementation of the UN Decade for ESD (2005-2014), and to the monitoring of policies and objectives of the UNECE Strategy for the decade.
PRACTICAL INFO: The workshop will take place in Attica Region (Athens and National Park of Lavrion) as well as in the National Park of Amfissa. The workshops will be implemented at the premises of the leader, the premises of the Centre of Environmental Education (CEE) of Lavrionand the CEE of Amfissa. Some activities will take place outdoors (fieldwork), depending on their target. Accommodation will be offered in local small sale units, as well as the CEE of Amfissa. The diet will be based on local products, in a percentage higher than 80%. The ecological footprint of the seminar will be taken into consideration and efforts will be made to keep it low.
REGISTRATION: There are no registration fees, and all travel and accommodation expenses of the selected Learners will be covered by the organizers.
