1 / Mary Smith & Joe Jones / An Overview of the Study of Body Modification in the Last Decade: Literature Review and Survey Analysis
This study includes a comprehensive literature review of previous studies relating to body modification, specifically body piercing and tattooing practices, and is followed by the author’s study of 240 volunteering university students who completed a 24-question survey. / Jack Taylor, Jacksonville District Health Unit / Oct 1 – Nov 20/13
Students at Georgian College Barrie Campus / Recruit via posters and flyers handed out in the library lobby.
Online survey will collect information on the following: demographics, GPA, participants’ opinions regarding others’ body modification, and an inventory of their own body modification (ear piercing, body piercing, and tattooing). Each participant will also complete the BFI Personality Inventory. / This study did not find the correlations previously published that linked Neuroticism, (un)Conscientiousness, and low academic performance to the practices of body piercing and tattooing. An interaction effect was observed (age x tattoo status x sex) that suggests that, at least in this group of individuals, that if a participant is tattooed, they are also likely to be aged 15-25 and female. Qualitative commentary from participants is also included, as well as directions for future research.
