I.Description of the Course:

Personal Fitness is a part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program at North Atlanta High School which emphasizes a format based on the following concepts: holistic learning, intercultural awareness and communication.Students will gain analytical skills in order to promote informed decision-making.Technology will be used appropriately through inquiry-based learning in order for students to gain an increased understanding of how Personal Fitness relates to the world around them.

IBMYP- Middle Years Programme

This course is part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at North Atlanta High School which aims to help IBMYP learners to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. The learning experiences will allow students to gain analytical skills to promote informed decision-making, engage in teamwork and collaboration, frame their own inquiries, pursue personal aspirations, set challenging goals and have persistence to achieve them. Students will work towards a deepening of their conceptual understanding as they approach concepts from a range of perspectives. As concepts are studied throughout the year, the following global contexts will be in constant consideration: identities and relationships, orientation in time and space, fairness and development, globalization and sustainability, scientific and technical innovation, and personal and cultural expression. IBMYP Assessments aim to support and courage student learning by providing feedback and promoting deep understanding of subject content by supporting students in their inquiry in real-world contexts.Specific assessment criteria with subject objectives will be provided. A year-long IBMYP personal project accompanied by a journal is to be produced at the end of the 10th grade year. The personal project enables students to engage in practical exploration through a cycle of inquiry, action, and reflection. Timelines and descriptions of tasks will be provided. Students will be assessed on a 0-7 IB scale in order to receive an IB grade at the end of the course. The IB grade will not affect students’ transcript grades and it is for IB reporting purposes only.

II.Aims and Objectives:

Aims – The aims of teaching and studying Personal Fitness is to encourage and enable students to develop:

  1. An appreciation and understanding of the value of fitness and its relationship to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
  2. Expose students to a variety of activities and experience related to personal fitness to develop students who will pursue personal fitness throughout their lives.
  3. Provide opportunities for students to make personal decisions related to their physical health.

Objectives:

Students will:

  1. Participate in the GEORGIA FITNESS ASSESSMENT PROGRAM. Georgia requires that all students grades 9-12 be evaluated using the FITNESSGRAM.

  2. Analyze the results from the FITNESSGRAM.
  1. Create personal fitness goals for each component of fitness: cardiovascular strength, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition.
  2. Incorporate the principles of the FITT (Frequency-Intensity-Time-Type) Exercise Plan when creating the fitness plan.
  3. Discover, and employ various exercise and movements to increase personal growth in each area of fitness.
  4. Critique and evaluate the results from the FITTNESGRAM to determine personal growth.

III.Methodology: This course is taught using various methods including: research, student led activities, teacher demonstration of skills, small group activities, and reflection..

IV.Methods of Assessment: Formative and summative assessment methods will be used.

VI. Grading Policy - Assignment categories

1) Formative Assessments 45% (Daily participation & class work, Gym clothes, homework, quizzes,projects)

2) Summative Assessments 45%(Common assessments, unit tests, research papers/essays

major assignments/FOP, midterm)

3) Final: 10%

VI.Make-up Policy: According to school board policy, make-up work will not be allowed for unexcused absences. An absence is not excused unless a note is brought in the day you return to school/class. It is your responsibility to find out work missed when you are absent. It is suggested that you share numbers with a classmate to find out what you missed. Make-up work is due the second class of the students return.

VII. Material

Each student will be required to have a Personal Fitness Portfolio. PF portfolio must bePaper or plastic folder must have 3-pronges, withpockets and 3 dividers(no Binder accepted) -Divider 1; Titled Objective/ Sponge activities (25-30 sheet of blank writing paper behind tab) – Divider 2; Class Notes (50 sheets of blank writing paper behind tab) - Divider 3: Class handouts/ Test (0).

Every student must dress in appropriate gym attire (cannot be the same clothes they wore to school). We will practice good hygiene.

VIII. Writing across the Curriculum:

The Common Core Standards for high school students emphasize writing in all subject areas. Students will learn the writing process, how to research and use APA/MLA citations. Friday Oral Presentation is a required writing products will include expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative text. Published writing samples will be collected for portfolios. There will be 6 F.O.P. for semester. Student will receive a F.O.P rubric.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

  1. NO FOOD or DRINKS are allowed in the room. Bottledwater is permitted.

2. Be Prepared. Arrive to class prepared with all materials.

  1. RESPECT all people and equipment at all times. A positive attitude is important. You are expected to come to class each day willing to learn and to be respectful of others. You are expected to clean up your workstation at the end of the period.
  1. HALL PASSES are not issued the first and last 15 minutes of class.
  1. PUNCTUALITY is expected.

Anyone caught eating in class will be assign detention on the second offense (no exceptions).

Cell phone will be given to administrator on second offense (no Exceptions).
