Subject: Spanish I Grade level: 9-10

Spanish I

------

Essential understanding: Many linguists believe that the first spoken words of humans were nouns. The power of a noun is rooted in the fact that, in various cultures, language is used to identify and give meaning to that which we name. The names of people, places and things are reflections of values and the organization of cultures. Because of the diversity among Spanish speaking countries, the name of a fruit, for example, may vary from region to region. Furthermore, a noun is an important part of speech with a special relationship to articles and adjectives.

Artist: Roberto Matta (1911 - 2002)

Roberto Mattawas a famous Chilean Surrealist Painter. This painting is one of his best-known works, called “La Mela”

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language that goes to his heart — Nelson Mandela

Overview: This month you will learn that nouns are called “sustantivos.” You will practice categorizing nouns, including by gender (In Spanish all nouns are assigned a gender and the article preceding it is also gender based) As you gain knowledge of nouns, you will also have the opportunity to write a simple sentence using what you learned this month and in the previous unit. Finally, you will explore the cultural variations of “naming things”

Guiding question 1: What is the relationship of a noun to other parts of speech and Spanish speaking cultures?
