Students Evaluating Teachers
Johnny would not do his work. He thought he could slide by without doing anything. Mr. Smith had Johnny in his sights. Johnny made life hard on himself, but Mr. Smith never gave up. Teachers like this deserve to be recognized. Therefore, students should be allowed to evaluate their teachers.Teachers must do their jobs. In order for teachers to improve, feedback needs to be given. If given feedback, their overall performance may increase Students should evaluate their teachers to have teacher accountability, positive recognition, and overall improvement.
There are times when any teacher does not do their job correctly. Teachers are human and sometimes make mistakes, but what if a teacher is not effective? Students could suffer if administration is never aware. In the article, “Should Students Be Able to Grade Their Teachers?” by Michael Gonchar, discussions about whether or not students should grade their teachers was discussed. Colleges use this method already. It is a valuable tool to sort out horrible teachers. Furthermore, teachers need accountability from the ones who see them daily.
Many times excellent teachers go unnoticed; therefore, student evaluations could be important. In the article by Gonchar, it stated, “These efforts are stirring skepticism and anger among teachers.” Why would a teacher care if a student has to evaluatetheir performance in their jobs? To ensure quality teachers are in the classroom, student evaluations are necessary.
Student evaluations could help struggling teachers improve their teaching styles. With so much weight being put on writing and test scores, student evaluations could help new or weak teachers improve their teaching game. Because of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s push for teacher evaluations, the article expresses that teachers are being forced to up their game in the classroom. Undoubtedly, student evaluations of teachers would improve this situation.
In summary, students, who evaluate their teachers, may offer help in correcting teacher issues, praising awesome performance, and aid in the overall improvement of the schools and students success. As the author of the article discussed, teachers being evaluated by students can provide a positive atmosphere for teachers and students. Students increasing their performance and teachers who improve their teaching methods create a win, win for everyone.
