SummerTransitionProgram

•TheCenterforStudentswithDisabilitiesoffersafour-weekprogramforincomingfreshmenwithdisabilities.TheintentoftheprogramistohelpstudentsmakeasmoothtransitionfromhighschooltouniversitylifeatUW-Whitewater.Studentsareenrolledintwo,three-creditcourses:

•AcademicSurvivalSkills

–Thiscourseemphasizessuchthingsasnote-takingskills,test-takingstrategies,verbalandwrittenlanguageskillsandtheprocessofwritingauniversity-levelresearchpaper.

•TransitiontoCollegewithaDisability

–Thiscourseisdesignedtohelpcollegefreshmenwithdisabilitiesdevelopcommunicationskills,criticalthinkingandlearningstrategies,andskillsthroughengagementinprojectsandpresentationsandtheuseofassistivetechnologies.

•Additionally,theSummerTransitionProgramprovidesone-to-onesupportfromprofessional

staffandfacilitatesconnectionswithcampusandcommunityresources.

•TheUW-WhitewaterSummerTransitionProgramclearlycontributestoimprovedacademicperformanceandretentionofstudentswithdisabilities.Thenationalgraduationrateforstudentswithdisabilitiesis19percent,accordingtothe2010HarrisPoll.StudentsthatsuccessfullycompletetheSTPgraduateatarateof48percentatfiveyears,morethandoublethenationalrate.Infact,96percentofSTPstudentspersistfromthefirsttosecondsemesterduringtheirfreshman

ProjectASSIST

•ProjectASSISTisasupplementary,fee-basedprogramthatprovidescomprehensiveandindividualizedsupportservicestostudentswithdisabilities.Althoughitsprimaryfocusisacademicsupport,theprogramalsoaddressesstrengtheningstudents’timemanagement,organizationandproblem-solvingskills.

•Tutoring

•ProjectASSISTtutorsareundergraduateandgraduatestudentswhoaretrainedinstudyskillsandlearningstrategies,assessmentoflearningstylesandtechniquesforworkingwithindividualswithdisabilities.
