STUDENT SERVICES SPECIALIST

PLANNING, RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Under the general supervision of the Activity One Faculty Coordinator, the Student Services Specialist will be responsible for recruiting, training, and overseeing peer advisors, mentors, Supplemental Instruction (SI) student facilitators, and student financial aid outreach advisors for the First Year Experience Program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Train and provide work direction to student workers (peer mentors, Supplemental Instruction student facilitators, and financial aid advisors) as assigned.

Operate a PC or computer terminal to update student records, input data, generate reports and verify student information.

Process applications and forms and maintain current knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and legislation.

Prepare and maintain records, reports, schedules, timesheets, and files related to assigned function.

Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Any combination equivalent to: two years of college-level course work in social science, human services or a related field and two years of increasingly responsible experience in a related student services program.

Knowledge of: modern office practices, procedures, equipment, basic mathematical skills and record-keeping techniques; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; and district organization, operations, policies and objectives.

Ability to: maintain records, prepare reports, learn and interpret rules, regulations and policies; meet schedules and timelines and to work independently with little direction; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; train and provide work direction to others; and communication effectively both orally and in writing.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Bilingual/Spanish speaking skills required.

Experience with first year experience programs and activities.

Experience with training others.

A college degree.

SALARY RANGE $2,940 - $3,594 per month

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Position is full-time classified, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Excellent fringe benefits including eight 32-hour work weeks during the summer. Working hours will be from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Employment is dependent upon satisfactory employment verification, fingerprint check/tuberculosis examination. The selected candidate must provide identification/work authorization. Physical standards are available for review in Human Resources.
