SHEFFIELD CELEBRATES LOTTERY

FUNDING FOR ALL

A Sheffield based group will help to break the cycle of low achievement and lack of self-esteem in young peoplethrough a Big Lottery Fund grant of £10,000announced today.The project is one of 92in Yorkshire and the Humber region sharing in £748,420 from a new round of Awards for All grants.

Magnetized, a community groupwill use the Lottery good cause cash to employ a youth worker to interact with young people at risk of crime. It will usefilm making to engage themand aims to give disadvantaged young people opportunities to develop skills which will lead to employment.

Jordan Biltawi, Chair of Magnetized,said: “Magnetized is working with young people in Sheffield and with the help of the Awards for All funding weareable to do more of the multimedia projects, giving young people opportunities they otherwise wouldn't get."

Vanessa White, Big Lottery Fund Head of Yorkshire and the Humber region, said: “It is really important that our young people have somewhere to go and something to do. Magnetizedissecuring opportunities and spaces that will provide a safe environment to develop skills and reduce their exposure to anti-social behaviour and crime. We are delighted to be supporting them. They and 91 other projects across the region are sharing in close to £750k in grants this month.”

Other groups receiving funding in Sheffield today include: Burngreave Community Radio (BCR) Limited,which will use its grant of £10,000 toupgrade its equipment and run courses for community members.£9,927 has been granted toThe Sheffield Wildlife Trust to produce leaflets about walks in the areas and work alongside neighbourhood schools to create a sculpture to represent the local wildlife in the area.

Another group celebrating isYouth Can Achieve Ltdwhichworks with disadvantaged young people to provide them with skills to make positive career choices. It will use its grant of £8,550 to involve a business development consultant who will formulate strategies, to enable the group to expand the service they provide to more young people in the area.

Meanwhile, an inter-generational project by Stradbroke Primary School in Richmond will use its grant of £9,099 to fund equipment for family photography courses for pupils and other community members.

BIG’s Awards for All programme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply.
