Step Up To Writing
CONCLUSIONS TIE IT ALL TOGETHER
SOME REMINDERS ABOUT WRITING QUALITY CONCLUSIONS
When you write a conclusion statement or a conclusion paragraph, try one of the following methods:
SUMMARIZE Summarize information
In fact, skateboarding is good exercise and great fun.
ENCOURAGE Encourage your reader to take action
When adults see young kids smoking, they must speak up.
CONVINCE Try once more to convince the reader to see your side
Truly, bicycle helmets do save lives.
CHALLENGE Challenge your reader to think
Not everything on television is worth watching. So next
Time, stop and think before you plop yourself down and
waste away in front of the television.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
WHEN WRITING A CONCLUSION
1. Restate your position and remind readers of your topic.
2. Don’t just recopy the topic sentence. Reword it! Say it another way by
using synonyms (words that mean the same) to replace the key words from
your topic sentence.
3. Use a conclusion phrase or transition. Some common conclusion phrases
include:
In fact definitely certainly
Truly clearly to sum up
Therefore obviously surely
In conclusion as a result as you can see
4. Avoid phrases such as:
As I have said and that is the end of my essay
As you have already read and that is how I feel about…
As I proved the end
Now you should know thank you
5. To help focus your conclusion and reinforce your thesis statement, you
should consider trying one or more of the following methods:
Summarize your paragraph or essay
Convince the readers of your position
Challenge readers to think about the issue
Encourage readers to take action
6. Vary your word choices and sentence structure. Don’t repeat the same
words, phrases, or sentences. That’s boring!
7. Using a direct quotation in a conclusion is almost always a plus.
Find a relevant quote by someone important to include.
8. Imitate professionals, teachers, or fellow students. Listen and look for ways
in which good writers conclude their paragraphs or essays.
