The talk:

The talk will be a detailed discussion of some important topics in PRC family law, including matrimonial regimes, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, protection of minors and current practices involving Wills and trusts. With an understanding of the rules that affect property rights of many clients from the PRC, the talk will also cover the implications of PRC family law rules on trust and tax planning, such as in the context of pre-US immigration tax planning and trust and estate planning for US beneficiaries.

The talk will be in Mandarin Chinese.

The speakers:

Han Chen’s practice focuses on family law, private wealth management, succession planning. He has extensive experience in cross-border marriage, prenuptial agreements, divorce settlement agreements, family wealth management, succession planning and family asset division, in particular with respect to the division of family assets such as equity or other interests from family businesses. He advises the majority of the private banks in China and Professional Trustee companies. He has been the Private client Lawyer of the year 2016, nominated by the Asian Lawyer. He is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Civil, Commercial and Economic Law of China University of Political Science and Law.

Wei Zhang’s practice focuses on sophisticated tax and wealth planning matters for high net worth individuals and their families, both in a cross-border context as well as in US domestic planning matters. She advises clients in the creation and administration of wealth planning structures that are tax efficient while reflecting long term goals in the protection and succession of wealth in multi-generational families. She also provides advice to individuals with various US connections, such as making gifts to US beneficiaries, preparing for migration to the United States, expatriation from the United States, investment in the United States or coming into compliance with US tax and reporting obligations. Prior to moving to the Hong Kong office of Withers LLP at the beginning of 2014, she practiced in two US offices of Withers, in New York City and New Haven, Connecticut, respectively.

For “early bird” registrations received on or before 20 February 2017 the cost per person will be HK$250 for members of STEP and the HK Trustees’ Association Ltd, and HK$300 for non-members. Applications for ten or more members can enrol at a special discount fee of $225 per person. For registrations received after 20 February 2017 the cost will be $300, $350 and $275 respectively. Student members of Hong Kong University and Chinese University can enrol at a special rate of $50.
