Steeplejack Services – Co-op Refinery Complex

Spring 2015

The CCRL Refinery Complex known as Consumers Co-operative Refinery Limited is now called the Coop Refinery Complex, which is an oil refinery that is spread over 544 acres located in the city of Regina, Saskatchewan and is owned by Federated co-operatives Ltd. This refinery provides oil products to the member co-operatives of Federal Co-operatives Ltd.

The Federated Coop was established in 1935 as a small barrel per day refinery in response to concerns of the buying up of independent oil refineries in Saskatchewan by all the major oil companies in 1933 and 1934, which had increased the price of $0.03 per gallon. On May 27 th, 1935 this facility was the world’s first Cooperative refinery to go “on stream” as a 500 barrel per day skimming plant. In 1939 the coop refinery complex signed a contract to build a crocking Plant at a cost of some $250,000 which expanded this plant to 1,500 barrel per day. On August 24th, 1951 this plant was processing 5,000 barrel per day after an expansion. In 2015 this same refinery can increase up to 145, 000 barrels per day.

This is shown on this particular site as Brock Canada(Steeplejack) has been on the CRC for the site for the past 20 years. This year’s 2015 Spring shutdown reached 10% female ratio on site which is great to see a ratio like this on a big shutdown. Under the direction of Mike Malecki, Tim Brooks, Jamie Johnston and Doug Ridgeway this shut was completed ontime and a success that the Sisters of local 1985 were proud to be a part of. Brock Canada is always prepared to face whatever challenges they are given at the CRC and the Sisters of local 1985 help on all aspects on the job and are mentored by brothers on this project.

Brock Canada was the first scaffolding contractor in Saskatchewan to employ women scaffolders. Brock Canada is proud to employ women, they are a welcome and valued addition to a workforce usually dominated by men.
