1) (-8) + 5= -3 (signs are different, subtract, the bigger number is negative so the answer is negative)
2) (-2) + (-4) = -6
3) c + 4 for c = -8
(-8) + 4 = -4
4) Meka opened a new bank account. Find her account balance after the first four transactions listed below.
Deposits : $200, $20Withdrawals: $166, $38
200 + 20 + (-166) + (-38) = 220 + (-204) = $16

5. On Monday, a local dog shelter had six dogs. By Friday, they found homes for three but took in two more. Then how many dogs were in the shelter?
1.5 Subtracting Integers
5-3=2
-5-3 = -8 (change the minus to a plus, make the 3 negative)
5- (-3) = 8 (change the minus and the negative to a plus and a positive, then subtract)
RULE: Change subtraction to addition, change the second number to it's opposite.
1) -7-4 = -7 + (-4) = -11
2) 8 - (-5) = 8 + 5 = 13
3) -6 - (-3) = -6 + 3 = -3
4) The top of the Sears Tower in Chicago is 1454 feet above street level while the lowest level is 43 below street level. How far is it from the lowest level to the top?
1454 - (-43) = 1454 + 43 = 1497

-2 (14 - 5) - -2 (9) = -18
