The Invisible Man
Why did the rich man end up in hell? He did not send his servants out to beat Lazarus up. He did not turn his guard dogs loose on the poor man. He did…nothing. And that precisely was the reason he went to hell. Lazarus died of malnutrition and sundry illnesses at the gate of a man who used to “feast magnificently every day”.
Lazarus was not asking to join the owner of the mansion. He would have been quite content with the scraps that fell on the floor and were eaten by the house dogs, but he was totally ignored, treated as a non-person.
There are countries in the world today where such a scene can still be witnessed. There is an obscene disparity between rich and poor. Millions of people exist on a dollar a day. Millions go to bed hungry at night. The statistics are so terrible that it is hard for us to comprehend them. One will suffice: it is said that 11 million children under the age of 5 die each year.
Caritas Australia is the main Catholic charity in Australia, helping in very many countries, including Australia itself.
One small example: Vannak was a 15 year old youth living in a huge slum near Phnom Penh with his parents and siblings. Their poverty was extreme. He went to work to help his parents pay off their debts, but with no skills, he was lucky to earn $3 a day. He could see no escape out of grinding poverty.
One day he heard about a Youth Empowerment Project run by Caritas Australia’s partner, Youth for Peace. It was designed to provide life skills and vocational training. The goal was to increase youth employment and to help young people take responsibility for their lives.
Vannak decided to try it. At first, as he was so hungry, he was interested only in the food provided. After a while, he realised that this was his opportunity to escape a life of poverty and to help his family. He specialised in gardening and silk screen printing so that he became the leader of six silk screen printers. His garden provides food for the organisation and pays his school fees (he has returned to school). Whereas before he was lucky to earn $3 a day, now every silk screen project brings him $10. He sees a life ahead of him away from the slums, the drugs and the alcohol. Like all other Caritas projects, the Youth Empowerment Project is funded mainly by ordinary Australians giving a few dollars on a regular basis, perhaps the amount spent on one night out. Australian dollars go a long way in developing countries. I discovered that in many countries, AU$70 will pay for a full year’s education.
In the meantime, watch out for Lazarus, the invisible man at the gate.

SOCIAL JUSICE SUNDAY 2013: SUNDAY 29th SEPTEMBER
Each year the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ACBC) releases a social justice statement on an issue of contemporary concern for the Church in Australia. The 2013 -14 Statement from the Australian Bishops is entitled Lazarus at our Gate. A Critical moment in the Fight against World Poverty. It draws heavily on the Gospel reading for Social Justice Sunday which this year is celebrated this weekend Sunday 29 September. In the Bishop’s statement we are challenged to identify the people who “sit at our gate” like Lazarus desperately longing for our support and for a just solution to their poverty. Like the Rich Man (who wore purple and fine linen), we can become blinded, by our own enormous wealth, to the plight of those around us who struggle daily for their mere existence. Luke’s Gospel reminds us that such a chasm - between the rich and poor - is not of God’s making, but of our own. The Bishops’ Statement highlights five examples of those whom we can identify as “Lazarus at our Gate”.
Firstly: the hungry of the world;
Secondly: disaster-affected communities in developing nations;
Thirdly: Indigenous peoples throughout the world;
The fourth group of people identified as “Lazarus at the gate” is: People with disabilities: We are informed by the bishops’ Statement that disabilities are both a cause and consequence of poverty.
Lastly the 2013-14 Social Justice Statement talks of the plight of those people on the move – the displaced people. With an estimated 45 million people displaced by war or civil violence, the Bishops challenge us, the Church, to be a source of hope and assistance to those on the move around the Globe.
In the parable of Luke’s Gospel, (this Sunday’s gospel), Lazarus remains silent – only the Rich Man and Abraham have speaking roles. What is true of this parable is often the truth of the world. It is frequently the poor and marginalised that do not, or cannot, speak. This year’s Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement calls us for an action of Solidarity and in the name of justice, work to ensure that the good things of God’s creation should be available equally to all. Copies of the Social Justice Statement 2013-14 are already available in the Church’s foyer and at the side door. Please note that an electronic version of this Statement plus other information can be found: www.catholic.org.au and www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au
