Post title:Vice Principal (Students)

Purpose:

To contribute effectively to the overall management of the College and to the achievement of its mission.

  • To be responsible for all aspects of student admissions, support and guidance.
  • To be responsible for student achievement, attendance and retention.
  • To take responsibility for equality and diversity.
  • To be the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the College.

Reporting to:The Principal, through the Deputy Principal

Responsible for:Assistant Principal, Learning Support Manager, Counsellor, Student Liaison Officer and, through the Assistant Principal, Senior Tutors and Careers Officer

Salary / Grade:L14-L17

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As a Senior Leader

As a member of the senior leadership team to work with and under the direction of the Principal and Deputy Principal.

  • In establishing and maintaining the appropriate ethos at the College in pursuit of its mission.
  • In the recruitment, guidance, leadership and appraisal of staff.
  • In the enrolment of students and the maintenance of student discipline.
  • In implementing the College’s processes for strategic and development planning and review.
  • In implementing the College’s processes for self assessment and quality assurance.
  • In representing the College in meetings with the LA, Ofsted and other outside agencies as required.
  • In the day-to-day work of the management team in policy creation and review.
  • In servicing and attending meetings of the Governing Body.
  • By undertaking such other management duties as may be reasonably required by the Principal and Deputy Principal in the pursuit of the College’s Mission.

Students

As Vice Principal(Students) to take overall strategic responsibility for students which involves:

  • Safeguarding and assuming the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • Managing enrolment and induction.
  • Managing the tutorial and guidance systems including counselling, careers and HE liaison, individual student target setting and progress reviews.
  • Ensuring that robust systems of student support and welfare are in place.
  • Maintaining high standards of student behaviour and dealing with indiscipline.
  • Monitoring student attendance, retention and achievement.
  • Celebrating and rewarding student success.
  • Ensuring adequate support for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
  • Ensuring the implementation of Health and Safety procedures with regard to the safe learner.
  • Managing and liaising with the Student Council.
  • Managing internal student progression.

Curriculum Provision & Development

In conjunction with the Vice Principal(Curriculum and Quality):

  • To ensure that the College’s curriculum meets the needs of all its students.
  • To develop, implement and monitor a funded tutorial and enrichment programme.
  • To contribute to the development of enhanced learner support provision for students.

Recruitment / Deployment of Staff

  • To provide advice on staffing needs, design of job descriptions and person specifications and to participate in the recruitment and interviewing of staff.
  • To manage Performance and Development Review procedures and to be the reviewer for a group of staff within the Pastoral team.
  • To promote teamwork and to motivate staff throughout the College in order to ensure effective working relations.

Quality Assurance

  • To contribute to self assessment procedures and to the production of the annual self assessment report.
  • To produce, implement and monitor the College Charter.

Management Information and Administration

  • To assist in the development of recording systems which enable the activities of the College to be monitored and for the tracking of student attendance, retention and progress.
  • To provide relevant management information for College purposes and external agencies.
  • To ensure the provision of appropriate, timely references for students applying for higher education or employment.

Communications

  • To ensure that information about student progress and achievement is disseminated to parents.
  • To take responsibility for parents information evenings.

Marketing and Liaison

  • To attend events in Partnership Schools and to promote the work of the College at Open Days / Evenings / Conventions and other events.
  • To ensure the coordination of the admissions process and the interviewing of students.
  • In conjunction with other staff, to develop effective links with employers and other external agencies.

Management of resources

  • To manage within a delegated budget the acquisition, deployment of equipment, materials and accommodation, particularly with regard to student facilities.
  • To assist in the liaison with public transport providers to ensure an adequate and sufficient provision of student transport.

Operational Business Planning

  • To contribute towards the College’s Risk Management Strategy and ensure its integration into College planning and review processes.

Equality and Diversity

  • To take strategic responsibility for equality and diversity policy and procedures with reference to students.
  • To set specific equality and diversity related targets for recruitment, achievement, attendance and retention.

Teaching

To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching as directed by the Principal.

Other specific duties

  • To play a full part in the life of the College community, to support its distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example.
  • To promote actively the College’s corporate policies, e.g. Health and Safety Policy, Equal Opportunities, etc.
