Resident Assistant Matron (Crosthwaite House)

“A school does not exist to send out men and women solely to play a part in life whereby they achieve a competence and honourable life of useful work and even a modicum of fame, but exists to send out for posterity and for their own generation, men and women who by their character shall leave the society in which they live the better for their presence and hence the world much nearer the Kingdom”

Words by Dr A.H.Watts, Headmaster 1936-1947

THE SCHOOL

St. George’s is a heavily over-subscribed traditional 11-18 co-educational school boarding and day school with over 1325 pupils including nearly 400 in the academic Sixth Form and 107 boarders. The school was rated as outstanding at its last Ofsted Inspection in October 2014; and in the last ten years running over 90% of students in Year 11 have achieved 5 or more GCSE passes at grades A*-C.

The school is a Christian Foundation with an active inter-denominational Chapel life. A Chapel Service takes place every Sunday, with the exception of exeat weekends and school holidays, and boarding staff are expected to attend some, but not all of these. Many staff lead some kind of extra-curricular activity within the school. As a Christian Foundation, St George’s expects high personal standards from its staff, and attention to dress, manner and behaviour are as important for all staff members as for the pupils.

BOARDING

St George’s was established by the Reverend Cecil Grant in 1907 as one of the first co-educational boarding schools in the country. It was an independent boarding school until 1965. There has been a continuous tradition of boarding since the beginning of the twentieth century. With boarding at its roots, St George’s and its staff are committed to boarding. We are one of 38 State Boarding Schools nationwide and we are a BSA member school. We are also part of the State Boarding Schools Forum.

St George’s has three boarding houses, each named after locations in the Lake District, and with total capacity for around 130 boarders. Boys in Years 7 to 12 live in Crosthwaite House, girls in Years 7 to 12 live in Keswick House and boys and girls in Year 13 live in Skiddaw House. Each house is unique in terms of fabric and character. Keswick is the oldest of the three houses located in the original school building. Crosthwaite is more modern and Skiddaw, having been built less than ten years ago, is the newest of our houses and is complete with en suite accommodation in every dormitory. Crosthwaite and Keswick are equipped with their own Sick Bay. All houses are equipped with study areas, games rooms, common rooms and kitchens.

Boarding at St Georges is based upon the principles of Christian values, mutual respect, openness, trust, equal opportunity, privacy, the right to work and play free from any form of bullying and development of the whole person - intellectually, spiritually, morally, culturally and socially. Through these principles, we expect all boarders to become outstanding citizens.
