Course Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Welcome to Honors Chemistry! This course is designed to present the Physical Setting/Chemistry curriculum set forth by New York State ensuring preparation for the regents examination in June. In addition, the course will be geared towards preparation for the AP Chemistry class through the use of SAT II questions. This class will also be providing you with a rigorous curriculum including the composition, properties, and changes associated with matter; as well as testing your math and problem solving skills.

SUPPLIES:

  1. A loose-leaf binder - 1 ½”
  2. Loose-Leaf
  3. Pens and Pencils
  4. Non Graphing calculator
  5. Reference Table (provided for you)
  6. Review Book (provided for you)
  7. Text: Holt: Chemistry: The Physical Setting (This does not have to be brought to class)

HOMEWORK (5%):

  1. Homework will be assigned and posted online EVERY NIGHT.
  2. Homework will be assigned mainly from the Review Book in which you will have to
  3. Write out the question
  4. Write out the correct answer with an explanation
  5. Homework will be checked Every Day. Each day’s homework will be worth 2 points

2 - HW is complete and neat. 1 - HW is incomplete and/or messy.

0 - HW is not done.

  1. To begin class, homework should be out and ready to be checked. Each student should be prepared to discuss and present problems as part of their HW grade.
  2. If HW is not done or unsatisfactory, the student will review a ZERO for the day’s homework and an academic detention will be assigned for THAT DAY.
  3. At the end of each week HW points will be added up and entered as a grade.

TESTS (60%):

  1. Tests will be given at the end of each unit for long units two tests will be given.
  2. Tests will consist of multiple choice and constructed response questions. These exams will be designed in the regents format using regents and SAT II questions.

QUIZZES (25%):

  1. Quizzes will be given throughout the course and will be both announced and unannounced.
  2. Quizzes will reflect material from the previous lesson and homework.
  3. There will also be both pre lab and post lab quizzes. Not every lab will have these quizzes and they may or may not be announced. These will reflect knowledge obtained either prior to the lab or after completing the lab.

LAB (10%):

  1. You must complete a minimum of 1200 minutes and receive a satisfactory grade on all those labs in order to be eligible to take the Regents Examination in June.
  2. If an unsatisfactory grade is received you must redo the lab for REGENTS CREDIT ONLY! (The original lab grade will stay)
  3. If you are absent for a lab you must see me to make it up!
  4. You will be required to do a complete lab write up for each lab

ABSENCES:

  1. Students are responsible for obtaining class notes and assignments - any handouts that you may have missed while being out will be posted on google classroom.
  2. Students will be expected to make up any missed exams in a timely manner after receiving the missed material. (You may come to extra help if you need to)
  3. If you know you are going to be out of school for an extended period, get in contact with me IN ADVANCE.

There may be projects, which will be counted as either a Quiz or Lab assignment. Further details for these will be given throughout the course, allowing ample time for completion.

** THERE WILL BE A MIDTERM AND A FINAL EXAM!!!!
