SS22: World History and Geography

Room 818

Course Overview:

World History and Geography traces the development of civilizations from early prehistoric people to the present and includes the teaching of geographic concepts. This course satisfies the graduation requirement for World History.

Grades:

Students will be assessed according to the standard scale:

90-100% - A

80-89% - B

70-79% - C

60-69% - D 59 -0% – F

Assignments:

Students are required to keep a 3-ring binder for this class. All notes, bellwork, handouts, and graded work should be kept in the binder. You must bring your binder with you every day to class!!

Bellwork: When students come into the room, they are expected to complete the assignment on the board in their binders. If there was any homework the night before, students are to drop it in the appropriate bin on their way into the classroom.

Homework: Homework usually consists of in-class work that was not finished, or longer-term projects.

Binder Checks: Binder checks will occur before most units. Students will receive a checklist for the binder check a few days prior. ALL work needs to be kept in the binder, in chronological order, for the entire year.

Projects: We will complete 2-3 major projects during the course of this semester. Class time will be provided to work on projects, however it is the student’s responsibility to use the class time plus their own time to complete the projects by the deadlines given.

Tests: Tests will be completed online through Canvas. Students will have one chance to retake all tests except for the class final, with the higher of the two scores kept. Students will receive a review guide to complete the day before the test.

Final Exams: At the end of the first semester, we will have a multiple-choice exam which will cover all content covered in the first semester. At the end of the second semester we will have a written final and two multiple-choice exams (one district, one class-based). One-third of the final exam score is based on the written final, two-thirds of the final exam score is based on the multiple-choice exams (higher of the two grades is taken). The multiple-choice final at the end of the second semester is cumulative for the entire YEAR (this is why you need to keep EVERYTHING!!)

Late/Absent Assignments:

It is an expectation that students will turn in assignments on the day they are due. However, late work will be accepted until the last day of the following unit. I allow for a 24-hour grace-period on all assignments. After that, a 10% deduction in points will be taken for each day the assignment is late, up to 50%.

For students who are absent, all notes, worksheets, videos, etc. can be viewed and printed out to be turned in through Canvas. It is the responsibility of the student to make up the notes and assignments they missed while they were absent. Students have as many days as they were absent to turn in missed assignments. After the number of days has passed plus the 24-hour grace-period, points will be deducted.

Classroom Rules:

1.Have your binder and writing utensil in class every day. You will not be allowed to work on chapter study guides together, so if you are not prepared, you will have to do your assignments at home.

2.Please be on time to class, and in your assigned seat when the bell rings.

3.The bell does not dismiss you, only I do!

4.Electronics may only be used in class at the direction of the teacher. If you are using any electronic device at a time when not specifically permitted, or in a way that does not comply with the directions that have been given, it will be confiscated and taken to the office.

5.Do not work on homework from other classes during this class.

6.NO DRINKS IN THE CLASSROOM (they spill). If you bring drinks in the room that are not capped tightly, they will be thrown away. Food being sold as fundraisers is OK as long as it does not create a mess. This is not the time of day for you to be eating your breakfast.

7.Please do not put your head on the desk. You will not be "bored" unless you have that attitude. Class time is not the time to take a nap. You have made a decision to be here, so be engaged while you are here.

8.When class time is given to work on assignments, do so.

Tardy/Absent Procedures:

It is an expectation that you will be in class, on time, every day. However, in the event that you are late to class or are absent from class, there are specific procedures which will be followed.

If you are absent, you need to first go to Canvas to check for missed assignments and/or notes. If you have questions about Canvas or the assignments, ask a classmate next. If you still have questions, then see Mrs. Rivera. It is the student’s responsibility to check Canvas for assignments and get them turned in within the same number of days that were missed (see late/absent policy above).

For students who enter class late (not in the door when the bell rings), you will follow the procedures outlined below:

  • 1st Tardy: Find your name on the checklist in the correct class period. Write the date in the first available column next to your name. Consequence – Conference with teacher
  • 2nd Tardy: Find your name on the checklist in the correct class period. Write the date in the first available column next to your name (2nd column). Consequence – Conference with teacher & Minor Incident Report (MIR) #1
  • 3rd Tardy: Find your name on the checklist in the correct class period. Write the date in the first available column next to your name (3rd column). Consequence – Letter home to parents to be signed and returned the next day & MIR #2
  • 4th Tardy: Find your name on the checklist in the correct class period. Write the date in the first available column next to your name (4th column). Consequence – Lunch detention & MIR #3
  • 5th Tardy: Find your name on the checklist in the correct class period. Write the date in the first available column next to your name (5th column). Consequence – Office Referral

Canvas:

All class content is on Canvas. A separate handout will be provided to guide you through the procedure for accessing class materials.
