COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. Understand the role of operations management in the overall business strategy of a firm
  2. Understanding the interdependence of the operating system with other key functional areas, like marketing, finance, accounting, human resource, etc.
  3. Identifying and evaluating key factors and the interdependence of these factors in the design and control of effective operating systems
  4. Learning how to use a range of concepts and analytical tools to solve common operational problems such as demand forecasting, capacity planning, qualify control, production planning, material planning and inventory control, etc.
  5. To understand basic project management methodology

GRADING:

Three Exams (45%) – Each test will be scored on the basis of 150 points maximum. The tests will be a combination of multiple choice and problem sets. The tests will be closed book and notes. Bring Scan-Tron Form #882. No make-up tests will be given. Total points for Exams = 450 points.

Quizzes/Extra Credit (5%) – Quizzes will be given at random. Quizzes will be based on the homework and the material discussed in class. No make-up quizzes will be given. Extra Credit will be given during different times in the semester for presenting homework to the class. Total points for Quizzes = 50 points.

Homework Assignments (30%) – All students will turn in 4 assignments for a grade but will be responsible for all material. No late assignments will be accepted. Each assignment will be scored on the basis of 75 points maximum. Total points for Homework Assignments = 300 points

Class Participation and Attendance (5%) – This is a discussion class. Participate by sharing your ideas and experiences. This is a good time to start discussing issues with your colleagues and team members. Please DO NOT email or call the instructor for absences unless there is a hardship and make up work will be assigned. Any student not attending during the project presentations will receive a deduction of 20 points per class missed. Total points for Class Participation and Attendance = 50 points (the points also come from Team Members Participation, see below)

Team Project (15%) – The Team Project will be graded on the written content (10%) and the presentation (5%). Total points for the Team Project = 150 points.

Team Members Participation – If your group members’ grade your participation at 40/50 (average), then 10 points will be reduced from your Class Participation and Attendance points. All group members’ evaluations will be averaged for the student’s score.

Any student who does not believe they are going to pass the course must contact the instructor at least 30 days prior to final grades for discussion of next steps. If any student is on the border line regarding grades (i.e. B+ at 899 points), their exams will be the basis of evaluation for the higher grade.

When you have missed a class and cannot turn in your homework, your homework will be accepted via email but you must notify the instructor prior to submission for approval. Do not email any other assignments. All others will not be accepted. Your assignment is still due on the same day as if you were in class. Plan ahead!

Questions: When you have a question regarding a homework problem, you may email the question to . If you do not have a response back within 24 hours, then call phone number, 825-4922. This does not preclude you from calling first. Either method of communication is acceptable.

COURSE ETHICAL STANDARDS

Cheating of any sort is cause for an ‘F’ either for the assignment or for the course (severity is determined by the professor). Any unethical behavior observed should be reported to the professor as soon as possible. Failure to report observed dishonest activity is just as unethical as the behavior itself.

Please discuss your accommodation needs with the professor after class or during their office hours early in the semester. Any exams taken at the Test Center will be given after it is given in class.

LAP TOP COMPUTERS AND CELL PHONE USE

Laptop computers are only to be used in class for note taking. If found that a student is using their laptop for other purposes (emailing, surfing the web, etc.), a deduction of 20 points per instance will be applied to their overall grade.

Cell phones should be silenced during class and students should not respond to any textsor use the phone while in class. If a student is found using a cell phone during class, a deduction of 20 points per instance will be applied to their overall grade.

During exams, laptops and cell phones will be out of the instructor’s sight and will be turned off. Under no circumstances will these devices be on the desk during exams. If found that a device is turned on and available, the instructor has the option to assign an ‘F’ to the exam.
