UNIT TOPIC: Digital Citizenship

Title of Lesson: Illegal and unethical use of technology.

Total Time on Task: 70 minutes

Content Standard:

12. Demonstrate appropriate digital citizenship through safe, ethical, and legal use of technology systems and digital content.

a. Explain consequences of illegal and unethical use of technology systems and digital content.

Examples: cyberbullying, plagiarism

b. Interpret copyright laws and policies with regard to ownership and use of digital content.

c. Explain the implications of creating and maintaining a positive digital footprint.

d. Critique Internet and digital information for validity, reliability, accuracy, bias, and current relevance.

e. Cite sources of digital content using a style manual.

Examples: Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA)

Objective: In this lesson, students will learn why it is important to safeguard passwords and how to create strong passwords that are difficult to guess.

Essential Question: What makes a strong password and why should I keep my passwords private?

Learning Target(s): The students can:

1. Students will learn how to create strong passwords.

2. Students will learn guidelines that keep their passwords safe.

Materials: Computer with internet, SMART Board, and Technology Resources

During: “Video Summary Staying Safe Online Part 1” (Students Handout, 3) & “Guidelines for Creating Strong Passwords” (Student Handout, 4)

After: Handout #1: Copyright and Fair Use, & Assignment #1: Using Information Correctly. Teacher leads a discussion on the questions included in the assignment.

During: Class Discussion: Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning of a digital footprint & Prezi Presentation: Students view the Steve Johnson presentation, & Video: Students view the Social Media Recruiting video, After viewing the video, students think, pair and share in groups of two about the following question. “Should Michigan State have withdrawn the scholarship?” After the students share, have a class discussion about their thoughts.

After: Exit Slip- Why is it importance to keep a positive digital footprint?
