Course Description

Basic Spanish language skills and a deeper understanding of the cultures of hispanic countries will be acquired in this class through various activities involving the complete participation of the student. This class is a continuation of spn1120H.

Course Objectives

·  learn to converse and communicate in various real-life locations such as restaurants, jobs, hospitals, hotels, clothing stores, etc.

·  identify cultural similarities and differences between hispanic communities in the U.S. and in hispanic countries

·  increase reading level and comprehension in the target language

·  broaden vocabulary and increase your level of written Spanish

Required Text

·  Zayas-Bazán, Bacon & Fernández. ¡ARRIBA!: Comunicación y cultura, Fifth Edition. Prentice Hall, 2007.

·  MySpanishLab online lab manual and workbook

·  Classroom Response System hand-held student unit (Purchase price and activation price are separate. Once the system has been activated by you for three different terms, there is no activation fee thereafter. The unit can be sold to another student.)

*To master the material in this class, students will read through and review each chapter before it is covered in class and thoroughly memorize all vocabulary the day that it is presented.

·  Materials might be linked to the MySpanishLab for further reading in culture and literature for vocabulary and content development.

·  501 Spanish Verbs Conjugated (recommended)

·  Highly recommended: Spanish/English dictionary showing usage. Recommended, Collins Spanish-English Dictionary or Webster’s

Material Covered:

During the semester, Chapters 7 through 15 of the textbook will be covered, although we can be flexible on this if we find an interesting path to explore. Do not be distressed if you do not have Chapters 13-15 in your textbook. You have the materials in the e-Book within MySpanishLab.
