Spiritual Care Coordinator/Chaplain
Supervised by: VP Residential Life
Purpose of the Position
Serves as a key member of the campus wellness team with primary responsibility for the spiritual wellness of campus residents. Oversees all aspects of worship services including preaching, facility accommodations, worship supplies and coordinating volunteers for various ministries.
Responsibilities
- Promotes the six dimensions of wellness with primary emphasis on spiritual wellness.
- Measure and monitor resident involvement in spiritual wellness opportunities.
- Complete new resident orientation and promote spiritual wellness involvement.
- Serve and/or assist on committees including but not limited to wellness/life enrichment, corporate compliance and case management.
- Participate in Simpson Health Center care plan conferences as requested or needed.
- Participate in budget development for spiritual care and maintain fiscal accountability.
- Attend required staff meetings and complete required continuing education.
- Follow all Friendship Haven policy and procedures.
- Develop and maintain a visitation program for those residents facing illness, hospitalization or hospice care.
- Coordinates and leads worship services including preaching at Sunday morning, weekday vespers and special holiday services.
- Provide opportunities for spiritual development including but not limited to Bible studies, discussion groups and volunteer ministry opportunities such as greeters, vocalists, communion servers, etc.
- Recruit, engage and supervise contractual employees as needed including but not limited to musicians and substitute chaplains.
- Create special and meaningful events in response to resident requests.
- Conduct funeral and memorial services as requested.
- Act as a liaison between Friendship Haven and area clergy including hospital and hospice chaplains; and, any Friendship Haven volunteer clergy.
- Write spiritual wellness articles for Friendship Haven and community publications as requested.
- Provide counseling, emotional support and spiritual care to both residents/families and staff as requested.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of aging issues and Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related illnesses.
- Support the mission, vision and values of Friendship Haven.
- Abide by Friendship Haven Standards of Personal Performance and Code of Ethics.
- Ability to work effectively with co-workers in a team environment.
- Proficiency in writing and public speaking.
- Proficiency in computer usage and related applications.
- Ability to self-initiate with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills.
- Ability to deliver excellent customer service and public relations.
- Ability to empathize and show compassion.
- Ability to manage audio/visual equipment.
Preferred Requirements
- Education: Seminary graduate degree.
- Experience: Three years experience as a minister/chaplain.
- Licensure: Licensed clergy.
Physical Demands
- Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during work hours.
- Willing to work beyond normal working hours, and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
Mental Demands
- Subject to frequent interruptions.
- May be subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, families and visitors.
- Required to manage multiple tasks.
