Spider Profile Guidelines

You are to select a particular spider species, research the species, and record your findings. The Spider Profile is to include a two paragraph written description of your spider, a colored drawing or photograph of the spider, and a completed classification table.

I. Description: A two paragraph description of you spider written neatly in complete sentences. It must be

written in your own words. (12 total points)

First paragraph (6 points): Should include information on at least five of the following:

·  Appearance – be thorough and very descriptive.

·  Size – metric units (i.e. mm or cm)

·  Range – where is the spider found (e.g. Brazil, Thailand)?

·  Habitat – living space (e.g. houses, barns, caves).

·  How does the spider use silk?

·  What role does the spider play in nature?

·  Is the spider medically important?

·  Information on reproduction and/or courtship.

·  Diet

Second paragraph (6 points): Should answer the two questions below.

·  How is your spider a typical arthropod? Provide ≥ three specific reasons.

·  What adaptations does your spider have – consider physical and behavioral adaptations. Provide ≥ three adaptations.

II. Colored drawing or photograph (four points).

·  Hand drawn pictures must be neat, use color, and must be accurate (e.g. number of legs, location of appendages).

·  Photographs from the internet or photocopied from some other source must reference the source.

III. Classification table (four points).

·  List the common name for your spider at the top of the profile.

·  Complete the table for all classification levels for your spider.

·  Make sure scientific name (species name) is correctly written.

Spider Profile total point value: 20 points
