INSTRUCTION AND INFORMATION
1. This question paper consists of THREE sections, namely:
SECTION A: Creative Writing (50 marks)
SECTION B: Longer transactional texts (30 marks)
SECTION C: Shorter transactional texts (20 marks)
2. You are required to answer one question from each section.
3. Start each section on a new page.
4. Write neatly and legibly.
5. Pay special attention to spelling, punctuation, sentence construction and language.
6. Number your answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this question paper.
7. It should be evident from each of your final responses that you have planned, proof-read and edited your work.
SECTION A: CREATIVE WRITING
Write an essay of 250-300 words on ONE of the following topics.
· Write down the number of the question and the title of your essay correctly.
· Supply a title unless one is given.
Question 1
“I don’t like you!”
We seldom hear these words. People pretend and hide their true feelings from each other. Do you agree or disagree with this practice? Write an essay in which you clearly express your views on the matter.
OR
“Power and wealth corrupts”
Write an essay in which you EITHER AGREE or DISAGREE with this statement.
Question 2
“I thought I would never recover after the mistake I had made”
Write an essay in which you briefly describe a disastrous mistake or decision you made and how you succeeded to recover from that.
Question 3
“I don’t know why, but I feel more responsible”
Relate the story or events that you think turned you into a more responsible teenager. Entitle your story:

Question 4
We are a class of 88 learners. Some learners frustrate me and some make me laugh. Write an essay in which you describe at least three learners that have an effect on how you experience your schoolday.
Question 5
“Men and women should be allowed to do the same jobs for the same pay.”
What do you think?
Write an essay in which you look at both sides of this topic and present your own view. In your essay, you should give reasons and use examples to support your arguments.
Question 6
Write a descriptive essay about:
This is my greatest treasure.
In a descriptive essay you choose one image or event and try to describe that one person, place or experience in as much detail as possible. You need to appeal to as many senses as possible, in order to create a detailed and satisfying description. Sight, sound, taste, touch and emotion can all be created through a range of descriptive devices.

SECTION B: LONGER TRANSACTIONAL TEXTS
· Respond to ONE of the following transactional writing tasks.
· The body of your response should be 120-150 words.
· Write down the number and the heading of the text you have chosen.
· Pay particular attention to language, tone, style, register, and target audience.
1. INFORMAL LETTER
You made in new friend with Bonxa. Bonxa comes from Kenya in Africa. He was an exchange student at your school for two weeks. Write a letter to Bonxa where you update him with the latest.
2. SPEECH
You have to talk to your class about one of the values of your school: loyalty, honesty, pride, respect, sincerity or endurance. Write this short speech.
3. DIALOGUE
You are in class and the teacher leaves for two minutes. One of the children throws an object and it breaks a window. The teacher comes back and accuses you falsely. The culprit (guilty boy) sees a chance to escape punishment and also accuses you. Write the dialogue that takes place.
· Use direct speech but no inverted commas
(Name of teacher) : ______why did you break that window!?
(Your name) : (surprised) Miss, it wasn’t me, I promise.
Complete the dialogue.
4. NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
A parent who came to pick up his child after school, accidentally hit another learner with his/her car. You have to write a report about this incident for your school newspaper.
· Make sure you mention the names of people involved
· Your report must have a headline
· Write your report in two columns
· You must have a good introduction paragraph
· Use direct speech for interviews
· Use the third person

SECTION C: SHORTER TRANSACTIONAL TEXTS
· Choose ONE of the following topics and write a short transactional text.
· The body of your response should be 80-120 words.
· Write the number and the heading you have choses.
· Pay particular attention to language, tone, style, register and target audience.
1. SHORT REPORT
The school produced it’s first musical in many years. Whether you took part in it or not, you were affected by it. Write a short report in which you comment on how you were affected positively or negatively by the musical.
2. INSTRUCTIONS
Langenhoven High School is publishing a Teenage Chef recipe book. Write down the recipe for your favourite dish.
· Make a list of the ingredients
· Explain the method of preparation step-by-step.
3. CARD
One of your classmates is leaving for another school. You have been friends since Pre-primary school. Write a very touching card in which you:
· say goodbye
· bestow good wishes on the person
· mention how much the person means to you.
4. DIARY
Begin your short diary entry with the following words:
27 October
They all laughed at me.
5. ADVERTISEMENT
Design an advertisement for a new, exclusive tropical island called: Ilha dos Tropicana. Use emotive language to convince travellers to visit this island. Provide contact details for bookings.
