Introduction to Multimedia Technology and Application

Objective

This assignment is for the partial fulfilment of CO3 of the subject EEE3112 Introduction to Multimedia Technology and Application. The objective is to equip the student with hands-on skill on how to edit or develop video clip using a given application which in this case is Adobe Premiere CS6/CS4. Besides that the students are also graded with soft skills (short report writing in a webpage) and lifelong learning ability.

Once graduated, a student who scored high in this subject would be expected to be an engineer that also knows how to editvideo if required by his superior to develop some kind of multimedia material. This quality would be an added value for the engineer if his is already hired, or would give him some alternative to find hiring in other fields that is not directly related to engineering.

Scope

It is not the purpose of the subject to produce a highly skilful videoeditor. The subject will only focus on giving some of such skill to students who are expected to graduate as engineers in the future.

For the above reason, the level of quality, either in the produced video or in the level of the theoretical knowledge given to the students, are only at beginners’ level.

Instructions

As a requirement to partially fulfil the CO3 of this subject, the students are required to develop amusic video clip for a chosen song from a given list. The rules are as follows:

  1. The choice of song is done by student, but the instructors shall put a control by giving only a limited list of raresongs (classical songs or songs of low popularity, but deliver humanity message) so that plagiarism can be avoided. The students are to register with the instructor and the choice would be granted as first come first serve manner. The students are expected to have listened to the song before in the class and should have no problem to appreciate it. Should the student finds difficulty finding digital copy of the song audio, he should get a copy from the instructor. Due to copyright law, it is not advisable to put proprietary song online.
  2. The assignment is agroup assignment.
  3. The video clip should tell a storyor deliver a messageof positive values based on the song’s lyrics. The students are to try to produce as professionally looking as possible avideo clip by composing as much as transition and features as possible.
  4. The video should end with an end credits listing out the group number and the names of the students and matric numbers. Military number or IC number should not be included. The end credits should also include copyright declaration to the authors (students), department, faculty and university and the production year.
  5. The video clip should include thelyricsof the song that can be presented in any creative way and should be synchronized with song like in karaoke video clip.
  6. The group must appoint a member to be the leader or champion for this video clip assignment. He/she should in-charge in documenting, preparation and job distribution, and would be the one to be interviewed during viva.
  7. Document all resources (either downloaded video or self-made) used in developing the video including any resources or new knowledge regarding video composing skill. This document should be done as part of a web page together with the other two group assignments.
  8. Deliverables format:
  9. The editable video project: Must be in .prproj format that should be able to open using Adobe Premiere. This and other required components must be put as a downloadable links in the web page.
  10. The exported video: Must be in any video format that can at least be opened in your owned browser (Check the plug-ins that you have in your machine). This video must be embedded into the web page.
  11. The documentation: Must be included in the web page.
  12. The assignment softcopy will be submitted during a viva session on the deadline. All group members must present during the viva.
  13. Deadline: Friday 28th of December 2012 (subject to change due to unpredictable nature of academic activities). Viva time is 9am – 1pm. The detailed schedule would be published later.

Grading Rubric

To guide the students to achieve the score they deserve, the following is the list of grading rubric to be used by the instructors. The final score would be the average of scores by all instructors.

  1. Video quality: grade for creativity and aesthetic appeal – 3 marks

Rubric question: By watching the video as a whole, how much do you feel that the students appreciate arts?

Very little – 1 mark

Moderate – 2 marks

Very appreciative – 3 marks

  1. Amount of work: grade for creative composition of assets (cuts or images) – 4 marks

Rubric question: By looking at the layers and assets, how much work do you think the group had put on the assignment?

Only easiest features used – 2 mark

Shows some difficult features – 3 marks

Complex composition of components – 4 marks

  1. Documentation of work: grade for language and clarity – 2 marks

Rubric question: Do you find good language in the documentation?

Bad language – 1 mark

Moderate or good but copy-and-paste language – 1.5 marks

Good own language – 2 marks

  1. Prove of lifelong learning: grade for ability to find new knowledge – 2 marks

Rubric question: After reading the documentation, how much new knowledge do you think the student have found?

Very little – 1 mark

Moderate – 1.5 mark

Considerable – 2 marks

  1. Adherence to the instruction: grade for ability to follow instruction (explicit or implicit) – 3 mark

Rubric question: Do you find that the students violate any rules? (example: video has no lyrics, no video cut (just images), a lengthy use of the original or other video clip of the song (plagiarism), end credits not put properly, etc.)

Violated 3 or more rules – 0 mark

Violated 2 rules – 1 mark

Violated 1 rule – 2 mark

No obvious rule violation – 3 mark

Note: 1 mark is spared for leadership quality during viva defence session. (Total of 3 marks for individual leader.)
