Spartans News: March 22 – March 28

Softball: The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team went 1-3 this week picking up their first win of the season with an 11-5 victory over Nyack. Joy Ferriello went 4-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI in game two. Heather Clausen hit an RBI double in the first inning scoring Samantha Welsh. STAC added six runs in the second inning, highlighted by Caitlin Sherrier's 2-RBI single with runners on second and third. Earlier in the week the Lady Spartans dropped a pair of close games at Pace 8-7 and 16-13. Against Pace, sophomore Heather Clausen went 5-for-8 for the day with 5 RBI's and 3 runs between both games. STAC will travel to C.W. Post on Wednesday then play their home opener on Thursday when they host NYIT.

Baseball: The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team went 4-2 for the week picking up a 5-4 win over Felician. Against the Falcons, Dan McDermott was 3-for-3 including a two run single while Joe Ferrara went 4.1 innings only allowing 2 hits. The Spartans went 3-2 in their five game series over Queens. In the first game of the series, David Schwartz and Matt Smith went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's each and Brian LaMarr went five innings allowing 3 hits and striking out 2. The Spartans put together three straight wins against the Knights holding them to one run. STAC shutout Queens 4-0 and 1-0 in Saturday's double header before falling 10-4 on Sunday. Kevin Ryan had a strong performance on Saturday going 3-for-6 for the day with 2 runs. Ryan also went the distance on the mound giving up 1 hit and striking out 12 batters. The Spartans will travel to St. Rose for a game on Tuesday and then host three CACC opponents next week opening with cross town rival Dominican College on Wednesday.

Women's Lacrosse: The St. Thomas Aquinas lacrosse team went 0-1 this week with a 14-8 loss at Wilmington. Lindsay Lawless had three goals and an assist for STAC while freshman Johannah Mitchell added two goals along with sophomore Anne Buttafuoco. Senior Jen Kugler had 17 saves for STAC. The Lady Spartans will return to action as they face Molloy on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.

Men's Tennis: The St. Thomas Aquinas men's tennis team went 0-1 for the week falling 5-4 to Dowling. Freshman Nic Jacques won 6-4, 6-4 in first singles while Paul Schumann and Mel Gonzales won their doubles match. The Spartans will play Dowling again on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. match.

Track & Field: The St. Thomas Aquinas Track & Field team will compete in the Quaker Invitational on April 3rd.

Golf: The St. Thomas Aquinas golf team will play at the Dowling College Invitational on April 9th-10th.
