PREREQUISITE: Satisfactory test score or a grade of C or better in Math 099.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Provides a review of operations with whole numbers, fractions,

decimals, ratios, proportions, percentages, measurement, area,

perimeter, and signed numbers. Emphasis is on computation.

CORE CURRICULUM: Non-Applicable

OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT: SMC is involved in an on-going assessment of all core courses.

As a student in a ‘core course’ some of your work will be used as an indicator of how effective the instruction in the course has been in helping students master the core skills described above. While some of your work may be part of a larger sample of students’ work used to assess course effectiveness, your anonymity will be protected at all times.

TEXTBOOK REQUIRED: Basic Mathematics for College Students

2nd Edition

OTHER REQUIRED MATERIALS: _____ SMC Academic Planner

_____ Scientific calculator (TI30, TI34 or TI36 suggested)

_____ Three-ring binder with dividers

_____ 3x5 inch index cards

_____ Graph paper

_____ Ruler

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Available in the Teaching and Learning Centers, the

Library, and in Niles: Video Tapes, Computer Software, Tutors, and a limited number of Student Solution Manuals on reserve.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Lecture, Discussion, Group Work, and homework assignments.

EVALUATION: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have

accumulated a minimum of 70% of the total points offered by

participation, attendance, quizzes, homework, and the comprehensive

final exam. Percentage distribution of assignments is as follows:

EVALUATION METHOD: Participation (includes attendance) 10%

Homework average counts as one-hour exam

Practice Test average counts as one-hour exam

Plus 7 hour exams for a total of 10 hour exams scores 50%

Final Exam 40%

GRADING SCALE: 90 - 100 A

80 – 89 B

70 – 79 C

0 – 69* F

A grade of C.P. may be awarded one time in Math 101 if the student is eligible. (C.P. stands for continuous progress.) This means the course is not completed at the C – level or above but substantial progress and effort has been made. Satisfactory attendance is required and the C.P. must be requested by the last day to withdraw from class.

* A grade of ‘D’ is not ordinarily given in Math 101 because it does not allow the student to go on to the next course. However, a ‘D’ may be given in special circumstances with permission.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is required at all class sessions. It is the student’s

responsibility to notify the instructor when an absence is unavoidable.

Students are expected to make-up any missed assignments.

Students start with 100 attendance points

5 points will be deducted for each hour of absence after 3 absences.

HOMEWORK:

·  Show all work, making sure that it is neat and numbered.

·  Credit will not be given for answers only.

·  Label assignments with your name and the chapter/section number from the book

TUTORING:

·  Scheduled tutoring is available to all students through the Tutoring Office in the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC).

·  Drop-in MATH tutoring is also available at both the Dowagiac and Niles Campuses. Contact the Tutoring Office for times and locations.

TESTING POLICY:

·  Exams will be taken in the Testing Center according to the schedule announced in class.

·  A picture ID is required at the time of testing.

·  Only one math test may be taken on any given day.

·  Students may re-take one of the seven Chapter Tests at the end of the semester.

·  Results will be posted within two days in a binder in Room 2004 on the Dowagiac Campus and in a binder in the Testing Center at the Niles Campus. A student may request that his/her scores not be recorded in the binder; however, that student will then need to meet with the instructor to obtain his/her score.

·  You may see your test anytime after it is graded by signing up to see your instructor or by asking a math tutor to see it.

FINAL EXAM:

·  Allow at least two hours to complete the final exam.

·  No finals will be given out after 3:00 pm at the Dowagiac Campus and 6:00 pm at the Niles Campus.

·  Once you have taken a final exam you may not re-take a chapter test.

·  There are no re-takes on the final exam.

OTHER COURSE
EXPECTATIONS:

·  You are responsible for your own learning.

·  Students are expected to participate in all group activities, attempt all homework assignments, and behave in a mature and professional manner. If you do not understand a topic or fall behind, then it is your responsibility to contact the instructor or seek tutoring.

·  Quizzes may be unannounced and may not be made up.

·  Students may be required to have one or more individual conferences with the instructor at the instructor’s request.

EARLY BIRD: If you wish to complete this course early, you must meet with your

instructor to discuss the details of this option.

WITHDRAWAL: If you decide not to complete this course, you must officially withdraw

before the withdraw deadline. Not attending class will not automatically withdraw you from the course. You will remain on the instructor’s roster and be given a failing grade unless you meet with an advisor in Academic Support.

HONESTY POLICY:

Cheating or plagiarizing will absolutely not be tolerated at Southwestern Michigan College. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing in any manner might be assigned a failing semester/session grade in the course. A second such incident while at SMC could result in suspension or expulsion from the institution. A student found in violation of this section of the syllabus will not be allowed to drop the course.

**Information in this syllabus was to the best knowledge of the instructor, considered correct and complete when distributed for use at the beginning of the semester. The instructor, however, reserves the right, acting within the policies and procedures of SMC, to make changes in course content or instructional techniques.

MATH 100 - Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learner will:

1.  Develop increased confidence in mathematical thinking and the performance of mathematical computations.

GUIDELINES FOR USE OF INDEX CARDS ON TESTS

M100 – One 3 x 5 index card beginning with Chapter 5 Test

M101 – For the first test (Chapters 1 & 2) – No index card

For the remainder of the tests: One 3 x 5 index card (not a piece of paper)

RULES:

1)  The student must use an actual 3 x 5 index card, not a piece of paper.

2)  The student may write (or type/shrink/paste) on both sides of the card.

3)  The student must have his/her name on the card.

4)  The student needs to leave space for the testing person to date the card.

5)  The student needs to present the card at the time that they present their ID.

6)  The student will turn in the card with the test.

7)  The student will need to make a new card for a re-take, if it is a chapter on which a card is allowed.

8)  FINAL EXAMS –

Students may use one 4 x 6 index card for the Math 100 Part-II and for the Math 101 final exam. Rules #1 through #7 still apply.

GUIDELINES FOR USE OF CALCULATORS ON TESTS

Graphing Calculators and notebook style calculators are not allowed on any tests or exams for either Math 100 or Math 101.

A calculator may be used on Part II of the Final Exam.

M101 – For the first exam (Chapters 1 & 2) – No calculator

A calculator may be used for the remainder of the tests, including the final exam.

RULES:

1)  The student must present his/her calculator to the testing technician when checking in.
